10 Things to Look for in Faith-Based Treatment Centers

There are several important things to consider when searching for a faith-based or religious treatment center.

Spirituality is at the center of many people’s lives. Faith is a powerful catalyst for change for many individuals battling addiction.

Secular treatment centers that lack a spiritual component may not necessarily be effective for people with strong religious or spiritual faith and beliefs. For these people, a treatment center grounded in spiritual faith may provide a more fulfilling and therapeutic experience.

Faith-based treatment centers approach addiction from a spiritual point of view. Spirituality is at the forefront of the treatment model, in which addicts surrender their addiction to a higher power. Each faith-based treatment center facility operates slightly differently, but most of them typically offer some combination of traditional and faith-based treatment approaches.

Because each facility is unique, there are several important things to consider when searching for a faith-based or religious treatment center.

1. Matching Faith and Values

There are many different types of faith-based treatment centers available. It is important to find a center that matches your faith and shares your values.

If you attend a center of a different faith, your beliefs may conflict or you may feel pressured to convert, which could affect your recovery process. For a recovery program to be effective, you have to truly believe in the principles upon which it stands.

So, the basic question is: “Does this treatment center share or support my faith, beliefs, and values?”

2. Suitable Approach to Spirituality

Even if you choose a spiritual center that matches your faith, their unique approach may not be in alignment with your specific needs. For example, some facilities may require you to attend religious services or prayer groups at certain times, whereas others may leave it as optional.

The treatment center’s spiritual approach to addiction may also differ from your philosophy, so be sure to do some research to ensure that the program is right for you.

3. Secular Programs

If you don’t belong to a specific denomination, but want to address the spiritual component of addiction, try a secular-based program.

There are many secular rehab programs that offer non-denominational spiritual services. Programs may include the option of yoga, meditation, prayer, spiritual counseling, 12-step programs, and so on, without the teachings of any particular faith or religion.

4. Alignment with Your Medical Needs

The center’s therapeutic model should align with your beliefs and philosophy as well as your medical needs.

It is possible that a treatment center may practice the same faith as you do, but differ in its medical beliefs and philosophy. For example, an important part of your treatment process may include maintenance medication, but some faith-based treatment centers may not approve of this approach.

On the contrary, some treatment centers may promote or encourage the use of certain medications, whereas you might be seeking full abstinence. Find a facility where both the therapeutic model and spiritual approach feels comfortable for you.

5. Treatment Options

There are many aspects of a treatment facility to consider. While there may be several Christian rehab centers, for example, not all of them will have the same treatment options. Most treatment programs will have some combination of medical detox, individual/family therapy and counseling, support groups, and physician check-ups.

6. Amenities

When looking for a treatment center that aligns with your faith, don’t forget to check out their amenities before you make a final decision. Additional amenities that may be offered include sports and recreation, nutrition programs, art and music therapies, massages, aromatherapy, spa treatments, and vocational training.

Determine which amenities and treatment approaches are most important to you to narrow down your faith-based treatment center options.

7. Cost

Finances are an important aspect to consider when searching for the right treatment center. You may find that while some faith-based treatment centers appeal to you, they may not be covered by your insurance. With a little research, however, it is possible to find an affordable faith-based treatment center that meets your needs.

Scope out the costs of different treatment centers and call your insurance company to discuss your coverage options. If you cannot get enough coverage through your insurance, you may also be eligible for a payment plan or sliding scale rate through the facility itself.

8. Quality of Care

It is important to remember that addiction is multi-dimensional. While there may be a spiritual component to addiction, it is not exclusively a spiritual problem. Addiction is just as much a physical and psychological illness as a spiritual one and it needs to be treated as such.

Surrendering to a higher power can be a crucial part of the recovery process for many people, but other forms of treatment are important as well. Make sure that the treatment facility you choose has qualified professionals such as medical doctors, nurses, psychotherapists, and addiction counselors.

9. Aftercare and Ongoing Support

Aftercare is an essential component of the treatment process. It can be considerably difficult to abstain from substance abuse outside of the recovery environment.

Aftercare provides ongoing support and helps to prevent relapse. It is important to consider what type of aftercare programs and support groups the treatment center has available to you after you finish treatment.

10. Recommendations and Success Rates

It may sound cliché, but if you’re seeking a faith-based treatment, find one that you can actually put your faith in. Ask for recommendations from members of your church or religious or spiritual group.

Ministers, rabbis, and other spiritual leaders may also be helpful guides when seeking a treatment center. If you’re not sure who to ask, check out the reputation of the center. When possible, speak with others who have undergone treatment at the facility; read reviews, and look up statistics and success rates.
