Beacon Health Insurance for Texas Addiction Treatment
Texas and Substance Use
The state of Texas, which is home to 30,029,572 million people, is the second-largest state by population in the country.1 The Lone Star State’s top 2 most populous cities are Houston and San Antonio, respectively.2 Similar to many other states across the country, Texas is affected by substance use disorder and addiction. From 2017 to 2019, the average annual prevalence of past-year substance use disorder among those aged 12 or older was about 1.4 million people or 5.9% of the selected population.3 Of that same dataset, 4.5% cited past-year alcohol use disorder, 2.1% cited past-year illicit drug use disorder, 0.3% cited past-year opioid use disorder, and 3.7% cited past-year misuse of prescription pain relievers.3 What these statistics go to show is that if you’re struggling with addiction and live in Texas, you’re not alone.

In the United States, almost all health insurance plans are required by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to cover mental health care services (including substance use disorder treatment) in some capacity.7

Types of Addiction Programs in Texas Covered by Beacon
Your Beacon (Carelon) program may help you get access to a variety of covered addiction treatments in Texas. Because Beacon isn’t a health insurance plan itself, you will need to check with your personal insurance plan to see what is or is not covered under your plan. The exact amounts of coverage may vary and be affected by the plan you have, where you seek care, and the type of care you need.
Depending on your situation, your provider or care team may recommend you undergo one or a combination of the following levels of care for addiction or substance use disorder:8-10
- Detox: During detox, which is often done in a medically supervised setting to manage the effects of withdrawal, you will undergo the process of ridding your body of any drugs or alcohol (or other substances). Often done in a medically supervised setting, detox is the process in which you rid your body of substances (e.g., drugs and/or alcohol).
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): With CBT, you will learn to identify and correct triggering behaviors with a variety of different coping skills to help stop or reduce substance use.
- Inpatient care. With an inpatient rehab facility, you’ll live there 24/7 for the duration of your addiction treatment program where you’ll receive round-the-clock medical care and supervision.
- Outpatient care. With an outpatient rehab program, you’ll go to your outpatient appointments once or twice, or less frequently, a week to receive care. However, you don’t need to stay overnight with outpatient programs.
- Aftercare. For many, continuing care after rehab is completed is essential to staying clean. Aftercare programs can vary but can include sober living homes, attending group meetings, or 12-Step programs.
