Beacon Health Insurance for Texas Addiction Treatment
Texas and Substance Use
The state of Texas, which is home to 30,029,572 million people, is the second-largest state by population in the country.1 The Lone Star State’s top 2 most populous cities are Houston and San Antonio, respectively.2 Similar to many other states across the country, Texas is affected by substance use disorder and addiction. From 2017 to 2019, the average annual prevalence of past-year substance use disorder among those aged 12 or older was about 1.4 million people or 5.9% of the selected population.3 Of that same dataset, 4.5% cited past-year alcohol use disorder, 2.1% cited past-year illicit drug use disorder, 0.3% cited past-year opioid use disorder, and 3.7% cited past-year misuse of prescription pain relievers.3 What these statistics go to show is that if you’re struggling with addiction and live in Texas, you’re not alone.
