UnitedHealthcare for West Virginia Addiction Treatment

UnitedHealthcare, part of UnitedHealth Group, is a large company that provides health insurance solutions to approximately 49.4 million people across the country.1 UnitedHealthcare (UHC) serves a variety of insurance markets, including employer-sponsored plans, the individual and family plan market, Medicare, Medicaid, the community and state market, and the global insurance market.1

If you live in West Virginia, have a UHC health plan, and are struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, you may be able to use your UHC coverage to cover some or all of the costs associated with treatment.

UnitedHealthcare Coverage

UnitedHealthcare provides health plans in a variety of markets. It is always a good idea to call the phone number on the back of your insurance card to learn more about your specific health insurance plan through UnitedHealthcare.

Employer Plans

In the United States, roughly 157 million people have a health insurance plan provided by their employer.2 Some common types of UHC employer-sponsored plan designs include:

  • UHC Choice Open Plan: UHC provides a few different types of plans under the “Choice” label. A Choice Open plan generally allows members to choose whom they can receive care from so long as the provider is in-network.3 Members typically do not need to obtain a referral from their primary care provider to seek care.3 Examples of services that may be covered in some capacity under a Choice Open plan include preventive care, diagnostic services, office visits, emergency services and urgent care, inpatient hospital, rehab, and mental health services.3
  • UHC Choice Plus: Another type of health plan that falls under the “Choice” category in the employer market is the UHC Choice Plus plan. These plans typically offer the same benefits that UHC Open Choice plans do, but you are able to use your insurance plan at out-of-network providers with UHC Choice Plus plans in situations other than emergency situations.4
  • UHC PPO: With this type of plan, members are able to choose their provider for care services, but you may be required to obtain a prior authorization for services.5 Covered services under UHC PPO plans may include preventive care, office visits, diagnostic services, urgent care and emergency services, outpatient care services, prescription drug coverage, pregnancy and newborn care, rehab and skilled nursing facility services, wellness services, and mental health and substance use disorder (SUD) services.5
  • Medicare and Medicaid plans: Depending on your location and personal situation, you may be eligible to purchase a dual health plan (Medicare-Medicaid) called Dual Special Needs (D-SNP) from UHC.6 These plans provide various health insurance coverages, dental benefits, prescription drug coverage, and may include a monthly allotment for essential items, such as food and utility bills.6

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab in West Virginia?

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), almost all U.S. health plans, including those offered by UnitedHealthcare, are required to cover mental health and substance use disorder treatment services in some capacity.7 This means that your UHC plan will likely cover at least some of the cost of addiction rehab. However, you’ll need to check your insurance coverage and benefits to verify your coverage details. Even if insurance covers your treatment, you may still be responsible for various out-of-pocket costs, such as a deductible, copay, or coinsurance.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Inpatient Addiction Rehab in West Virginia?

The ACA states that substance use disorder treatment must be covered in some capacity by almost all health plans in the United States.7 This means that your UHC plan may cover a variety of drug and alcohol treatment options, including inpatient care, medical detox, and outpatient programs. Only a provider can determine what types of care would be best for your situation.

Additional Types of Addiction Programs in West Virginia Covered by UHC

Additional types of addiction programs in West Virginia may be covered by your UnitedHealthcare plan. Some of these specialized programs include:

  • Couples’ treatment: If you and your partner are struggling with addiction, it is likely affecting your relationship. Entering a couples treatment program can help you both understand how addiction plays a role in your relationship and learn coping strategies.8
  • Rehab for Veterans: Veterans can struggle with SUD and may need specialized treatment services to address their addiction. Eleven percent of veterans who seek first-time VA services meet the criteria for having SUD.9
  • Aftercare: You may be referred to an aftercare program after you complete your addiction treatment program to help you stay the course of sobriety. This could include attending group meetings or living in a sober living home. 10

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Mental Health in West Virginia?

The ACA mandates coverage in some capacity for mental health and behavioral health services. You can check with UHC directly using the phone number on the back of your insurance card to verify if the following behavioral therapy methods are covered under your plan:

Other Options to Pay for Addiction Treatment in West Virginia

If you are unable to use your UHC plan to pay for addiction treatment in West Virginia, there are other payment options to help pay for drug and alcohol addiction treatment. These options include paying out of pocket, finding a state-funded rehab, or a free rehab near you. Be sure to ask the rehab center you choose whether you qualify for special financing or scholarship opportunities to help offset some of the costs of treatment.

It is important to keep in mind that even if you pay for addiction treatment with insurance, there may be additional fees that are not covered by your plan. Consider asking for a treatment cost estimate from your rehab center to see what your out-of-pocket costs could include. Call today to get started.
