Philosophy

The substance abuse and mental health treatment philosophy at Harbor Oaks Hospital is rooted in current best practices and evidence based research. Chemical dependency and mental health disorders are treatable diseases. These disorders can be acute or chronic, progressive, and potentially fatal. These disorders often co-occur. Chemical dependency and mental illness frequently go hand in hand and have a direct physical, emotional, spiritual and social impact on individuals and their families. When these disorders occur in combination with other behavioral and/or medical health difficulties, their impact is heightened.

This place is horrible. They do not attend to their patients who have legitimate health risks due to detox. They will “lose” your meds. The social workers are almost non-existent. The doctor is a jerk. It takes 3 days to get a freaking pillow. Food is disgusting. Do not send your loved ones to this place!

After 24 hours in er I arrived. Apon arrival at 2am by ambulance (2 hour drive), i filled out all the paperwork and was all ready to go. The admission girl declined my entry because a piece of paper (now invaled because i all ready signed voultary) was not timed.so i had to be returned to the origanal hospital by ambulace to have a time put on a paper, fax was not good enough. Got loaded into a new ambulance and made the long drive back. Arrived at 6am on the 12-6-19. The intake person was a compleat spaz. 97% of my intake was left undone. They showed me my bed and that was all. shift change was at 7am and it was to much work to be done in a hour. I seen the phyc doc at 7am. He talked to me for about 3 min then increased the meds i was already on. Art class was at 11am. at noon another person started my intake papers. It was a forien lady with heavy accent, she didnt say much asked a few short questions and said i was done. Social work group was after lunch, a lady reading of a paper and trying to get a disscusion going. There was no more groups. The medical doctor arrived at 9pm. Seen me for about 3min and just went with the meds i came in with.most were very expensive so he just had them use the meds i came in with. And would be started in the morining. I had refused all food Day 2 Vitals were done around 6:30am Seen phyc dr 3min or less at 7am. Diffrent one from the day before. Social work group after lunch same lady reading a paper trying to get a chat going. The was nothing the rest of the day. They refused my insalin so Again i refused all food. Day 3 Was the same a day 2. And again refused all food and they declined my insulain. The paper my husband got from main hospital said it was visit day. I was super excited. He called could not get anyone on the phone. He drove the 2 hours with the paper. They refused to let him see me as they had changed the sechudel and the was no staff to get me. Day 4 Vitals around 6:30am Phyc dr 3min or less. Art at 11am. Same social work group. No more groups for the day. Again insulan was refused and i refused all food. Husbaned called again still could not get anyone on the phone. Day 5 Seen phyc dr 3min or less 7am Vitals done around 8:30. Ate breakfast they refused insulan. Art at 11am Ate Lunch they refused insulan. Social work group was the same. No more groups Husband called still could not speak to anyone. Ate dinner finally got insulain. Day 6 Vitals done around 6:45am Seen phyc doc 7am 3 min or less asked to go home. Was told no could go home tommorow at 10am. Asked why i couldnt go today. No response. Ate breafast got insualin. Was complaining to staff about not going home as a social work lady waked by. Asked my name imformed me i could leave at 10am. Asked my address, phone number and if i had after care. I called my husband to pick me up. He arrived 2 hours later. Staff was still working on my INTAKE paper work as well as discharge.Forin lady had me sign a few papers didnt say anything other then sign this. No one called my husband, no one went over discharge or meds. Nothing. Handed me a red folder full of half done papers and gave me my stuff back walked me down to the lobby and away i went. Worst place i have ever been. I went on a 5 day hunger strike. Only see docs for less the 12min over the course of 6days.no one contacted my husband or could pickup a phone. Did not finish intake or duscharge paperwork. Very disorganized. Only 2 groups On week days, nothing on weekend. Update:4-10-2020 Just got a letter from harbor oaks regarding my Dec 11th complaint. They deterimeded 2-27-2020, 9 out of 37 programs were held 12-6-19 -12-11-19. Being 9 groups were held during my stay... no rights were violated. They did add more staff in February. Nothing more will be done. It is 100% ok to not do 28 groups and still charge for those programs.

Hands down the best treatment facility I've ever been to. The program is very educating and personalized to suit what YOU need to work on. The staff is over the top friendly and the atmosphere is very old but not a dump. 11 out of 10 would recommend.

I just left the substance abuse unit and must share to prevent others that truly want to start their recovery path to NOT pick this in-patient facility. 80% of patients are there for 3 meals and a cot, so basically just hanging around until pay day, head back out~ just to return again when the money is gone. Only one 1 hour group a day is instructed by anyone with education credentials and the rest are run by patients. The program is extremely understaffed, the ones that are on shift are burnt out and frustrated. I won't even talk about the condition of the building (don't let the new addition fool you, entrance and offices are new~ units are still in the old building). No money for maintenance is being spent on the portion, since it is all going to the new construction. Here is an example of ONE of the days I experienced~ staff member was escorted out due to having a pint of Hennessy in the unit, $20 was stolen from a patient's room and no hall cameras for proof to remove the perpetrator. There was a active shooter drill that was mandatory where apprx 30 patients and staff where in a cramped safety room with arguments happening, we all could have been injured or dead if it was real. I understand why a drill like this has to happen these days but what I do NOT understand is why there was NO staff available to talk to or calm us down after such a stressful event. Dinner included an at least 5 minute long extremely aggressive altercation between two patients in the dinning hall where staff did not have walkies to call for the 'Safety Team'. When I approached an RN later after this day's events, stating I did not feel safe asking if there was someone I could talk to, I was told to just "get over it". This is not a facility where one who really wants to focus on themselves and their recovery can do so without tons of unnecessary stress.

They have art class for 1 hour then 1 social work group the rest of the time is spent doing nothing. Was there for 1 week, seen the doctor for max 3min a day. At discharge noone went over anything with me just had me sign papers. My intake papers were being filled out with discharge papers. Its disorganized and understaffed. So lack of staff the programs dont happen.

Bring patience when working with this facility! It took 10+ hours for intake process, half hour or longer to try to speak with someone via phone on each attempt; little to no interaction with staff and doctors for both our minor child and ourselves. Seems very disorganized in many ways. We received several different people calling to ask consent for the same medication. Took them 2 days to provide clothing we brought to our minor child. Changed the release date at the last minute. Not enough time to make proper arrangements with my job.

I would just like to say, i have an 8 year old boy with severe anger issues, along with a few other diagnosis'...he was sent there for 3 weeks because he came after me with a knife saying "he would kill me" just because i was trying to get him to go to bed. He was staying up 20 hours a day, wouldn't sleep, wouldnt listen ect. I had very good communication with nurses, doctor & social workers. He is now on medication & is TOTOALLY a "normal" active boy! He verbalizes his emotions, instead of lashing out & destroying everything around him. I am very pleased with the treatment he got there. I am very happy with how my son was treated there & would reccomend this facility to another parent who has a child with "issues". We have been involved with a mental health facility for 3 years without any help other than an adhd meds that never worked & I told them, if we don't get him under control, its gonna escalate to violent outbursts...But NOBODY would listen to me, which ended up being the reason my son was hospitalized. I believe this hospital is doing a great job & I am so thankful for the support we had from them!!

Food is great too. I gained five pounds in one week, and I needed it. I would highly recommended this facility to anyone.

Harbor Oaks in New Baltimore is an absolutely HORRID place!!! Do not send your child here thinking they will be well taken care of and safe, they won't be. Very prison-like environment . The staff was extremely inept(especially the social workers), bad communication with the family and the child that is in need of help. This place was on the news for how bad they were in Nov. of 2017 ( Google it), they still are bad!

I was sent here by my parents in December 2016 after being involved in a near-death car accident and having a manic episode ensue after. This place was horrible. Yes-there was some very friendly staff members working but they were all very overworked there. Miscommunication between you and the people trying to give you your meds. I was called up to the end counter once and offered a prescription that wasn’t talked about to me by the doctor seeing me there. The person offering to me could barely explain what it was so I refused to take it. He said I could take it up with the court system. Best part was the food. As some of these other reviews mention you have such a wide variety of people in there. I was sent in due to a manic episode and was walking among heavy drug addicts and alcoholics, as well as people who had attempted suicide multiple times. You truly do feel like you’re free once you get out of there. They will tell you that you’ll only be in there 4 days maximum. I was in there 7 full days and I wasn’t even on suiicde watch. Doctor wanted to run up my insurance. Luckily i have never had another episode since and haven’t had to go back. Would not recommend.

I attended harbor oaks in February 2017. The overall experience helped me find better coping skills with my suicidal thought and anxiety. The morning and afternoon staff were amazing but the night staff were disrespectful. They made us go straight to our rooms before bed time & they yelled at us for literally everything that we did. They enjoyed arguing with us. The food was okay . Everything else was fine except for night time.

Very under staffed. 24-32 patients to 3 (maybe staff) Staff seem exhausted from constant obligation to be mandated. I’ve witnessed multiple incidents that could have been avoided. It’s a bad environment. I’d consider other options if you feel a need to go, or have a loved one go. I’m sure there are MUCH better options.

I was sent here under suicide watch along with other health issues a few years ago. They lied to me and the hospital social workers by making their place look like it was a relaxing Hollywood spa retreat right on a lake. The place was nothing as advertised. Dirty and crumbling. The staff who checked me in at the time was nice and professional. I definitely wanted help and recovery. Thankfully for my first few days I had no roommate at all. Then I got a cool person who was older than me and we got along great. The best way I can describe this place is it’s a cross between jail, a nursing home, and a good old fashioned mental ward. You had people that were suicide attempts mixed in with drug addicts there for recovery, and severely disturbed people just wanting to harass other patients and staff for their own amusement. The female staff members looked like young models just out of school who were either unprofessional or over their head working there. On several occasions a few staff members complained to each other right in front of me about “lazy and useless” co-workers that would hide away forcing the few who actually cared to pick up the slack. I complained to staff that other patients were harassing me and others and trying to enter our rooms. Most of the staff didn't believe us. The staff had to pick their battles working there, so it was easier to pretend conflict among patients wasn’t happening. I think any truly sane person who had to ever be put in this place will tell you that when you’re finally released you feel like you’ve escaped! Those are the kinds of dangerous people in there who should never see the light of day! Yes, the staff did peek in and check rooms every 15 minutes 24/7 to make sure that nobody killed them self or others. However, I can tell so much danger could happen within seconds at this place, staff rounds at that length of time do no good!

I was subjected to this place for a week and the only reason I am writing about it is so that no one else need to go through what I did. I was here for Severe Anxiety, Severe Depression, Suicidal thoughts, self harm, anorexia, BDD, and panic attacks. The staff quickly proved to be bullies to most patients. One girl was there with schizophrenia and the nurses would make fun of her behind her back and not allow her into leisure groups. Also, me and my friend, him being trans and me being non binary, were constantly misgendered deliberately and told that it was only a phase and such. The nurses would not let me use some of my existing coping mechanisms, demanding that I find new ones. I have PTSD from the experience and still have nightmares and panic attacks almost a year later. They made it clear that we were selfish and horrid people for even thinking about doing what we were going to do, only making us feel worse. Many patients, including myself, were afraid to tell doctors important information out of fear of being kept longer or yelled at. patients were leaving the hospital either not changed at all or worse, myself included. Please, if you or a loved one need treatment for a mental illness or substance abuse problem, DO NOT SEND THEM HERE> - Ash

My son spent two weeks at this hospital for treatment. I was a little leery about having him go here after some of the reviews I read, but then I though to myself these people are seeking treatment so why would they like it. Harbor Oaks gave really good care to my son. He has been clean for a couple of months now and even got a job. I would recommend Harbor Oaks.

I was a patient a few years ago and it was the worst experience of my life. I am still having nightmares. Problems: dirty, had to stand in line for an hour for meds, actually given WRONG med!! By nurse who was very confused. Ate only salads as I don't eat meat and they told me I would have other food available but never happened. Most staff very rude and condescending. I had never been treated this way. Dr. very rude and would only spend 5 minutes with patient and made us sit in the corner of his office!! Not given my medication ambien for sleep so up 56 hours and told I most be manic when I just needed my ambien. I actually had staff plan to put me in room with patient who was large and trying to hit everyone and I was a thin 56 year old!! I feel I will never get over my terrible experience at your terrible hospital. I actually felt more suicidal with the total lack of decent care I received. To add horror I had to pay $1600!!!

I went here for severe depression and anxiety. I felt 10 times worse in this facility than out in the real world. I was exposed to a lot of extremely mentally ill and disturbed patients. They did not supply me with any hygiene products and I was unable to shower or brush my teeth until a family member was able to bring me supplies. I wore the same underwear for days because they did not have any amenities. I was not planning to come to this facility, but because of a mental episode I had I was forced against my will with no notice. It was appalling that this facility did not have things to support patients in my scenario. I didn't come from home, I came from an actual hospital and traveled by ambulance to get here. When exactly was I supposed to pack a bag? The worst part about this facility is there was absolutely nothing to keep yourself entertained. They had their recreation room closed off for the entirety of my stay. The only thing I could do to keep myself entertained was to walk up and down the halls for hours. I felt myself going more crazy because of the boredom. It's been 3 years since I attended this facility and I still have nightmares about it.

This hospital could be worse than the one in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. The doctor never spent more than five minutes with me. It was the opinion of five or six of us functional patients that he should be tested for drugs. The groups were a joke. They were led by an aide and all of them were just repetitions of each other. And the aides spent most of the hour dealing with the non-functional patients. All of the patients' HIPPA rights were violated. I am disabled and this place is not ADA compliant. Do not go here!!!!

The only help I got from this horrible place was from fellow patients. The nurses did nothing to help me what so ever. I found myself scared to feel because they took everything as a diagnosis. I still have nightmares two months after that experience. If anything, that place made me worse. The only three employees in the facility that were understanding and helpful were two social workers and a maintenance man. All three we only saw very little.

I\'m a 48yr old female tht found myself in a scary place, Harbor Oaks. This facility is by far the worst place one could go to seek any type of help w chemical dependency and/or mental health intervention. The stsff is absolutely miserable, all of them from the nurses to the techs who for the most part are nasty, condensing and just rude. For some reason they treat the patients w zero compassion and complete lack of empathy. It\'s incredible to me that these ppl r hired w out any experience wrking w those in need. I see what is written on line regarding this facility and i have yet to read one word that is correct outside of the name of the bldg. I find it impossible to call this place a hospital. My reason for being here was state ordered after i found out i had to b tested for cancer while already being a spinal cord patient and became completely overwhelmed, i had a break w reality. This is the worst place i could have been placed for support and intervention. All of the negative reviews by staff and patients are unfortunately correct. The staff laughed at me, in my face while being admitted at 3am, not one kind word or gesture from anyone. Oh yes, there was one guy (a tech who was just hired) who hadn\'t turn cruel, yet. The nurse that chk\'d me in was one of the nastiest ppl I\'ve EVER met, she\'ll gt hers though!!! Ok, for the most prt, there are 3 bull meetings per day. I was there for 6days w zero social worker intervention. They claim u will receive one on one w a social worker, very untrue. Im a vet w a 10yr honorable discharge from the Army, i\'m also disabled. I had to enlist the help from the Disabled Vet Assoc as well as Medicare. W in 10mins of calling the Vet\'s i had a social worker visit and immediately let go. ...I repeatedly asked who my social worker was (as u can\'t b released w out tht interview) and was told time after time, day after by the stsff as well as the terrible doc that i was assigned to one person and tht person wud deny it. This went on for 6 days. Now the doctor... He\'s a completely other discussion as he himself had a hugh disconnect w his patients. W all of his training u\'d think he\'d have some place in his heart for those he worked w. Yes, he has a GOD complex and truly doesn\'t deserve it in the slightest bit. Although no one does but especially him...Plz do not send or let yourself or anyone you love b admitted into this facility. It will never change w out state intervention and patients taking their rights to our government agencies to do somethng about this horrible institution. I have nothing to gain by advising u as to what i see as an injustices to all of us who find ourselves in need of support. There isn\'t any support in this facility. Your days drag, endlessly. You do nothing at all. If your lucky there may b up to 3 (@ max) meetings, u may gt to color a pic or play w beads as tho your in 1st grade and you get to eat 3x\'s a day. Thank you for reading my story!!! May God bless you and watch over you in all you do.

Horrible, horrible hospital. My son was in twice, and they didn\'t help him either time. Came out the same or worse. Plus there was an incident due to the staff\'s inattentiveness that I can\'t discuss. Will never send him back.

I highly recommend against stepping foot in this place , the First doctor that assessed me made ridiculously rude comments at me, and as I was sitting there, told me \"it\'s time for you to leave my office\" in the middle of the evaluation . Horrific staff there.

This is the most absurd idea for someone who is suicidal or anything regarding their stay. I was forced beyond my will and my parents. \"Phone time\" hardly is on time. And when it is the staff rushes you through it. We are kids adults and elders who want or need to speak to our families. I find it incredibly ironic that there is a sign hung up that says \"recovery is best at home!\" Yet you trap us and question us and expect us to be happy. We aren\'t happy. And we never will be. This facility does damage. Because of others, you\'ll be afraid to fall asleep at night. I still don\'t sleep. We all act okay just so we can get the hell out of here. Do not send your loved ones to Harbor Oaks.

I have been to harbor oaks mental hospital and it was horrible I was never the same when I came out I went in and I loved my family I came out and I just looked at them and I just hated them I still hate them they don\'t look at me the same they look at me like I\'m a lost person that can find her way back.I went in the hospital and the staff treats you like a lab rat and your not aloud to have any friends or talk to boys I wouldn\'t send anybody there if I were u unless u want them to hate u and by the way don\'t say at least they would be safe because they wont

I was admitted to this hospital against my will under suicide watch. Ironically, during my stay here i have never felt more anxious and suicidal in my life. The staff is unattentive and lazy. There is little to do but pace the halls and watch tv. People come here for real help but end up being caged in and denied actual assistance. The most \"therapy\" you will recieve is an awful group session with other patients, and a daily 2 minute conversation with a psychiatrist who decides whether you stay or go. When i got home, i cried for days over my experience and was anxious for weeks- my suicidal thoughts recurred immediately. This place will not help you.

They had a variety of programs. Staff didn't seem very concerned with accomplishing anything. There needs to be more structure.

They were nice and all bla bla but aside from them I don\'t know about everyone else but I think think a kid being sent away expesualy to a freaking mental hospital will make any change it just showed me that I\'m crazy and that my parents thought the same.

The facility was very accountable. I believe the environment could be more welcoming. This was a scary time in the lives of my family members and the staff was very gracious and understood our concerns and did everything they could to help our family.

The staff was well trained and informed and knew how to handle every situation. The lack of funds towards a better facility was a weakness. They were very assistive through the entire process and I will recommend them again in the future.

My brother was admitted to this facility under suicide watch. He wanted to jump off of a bridge and end his life. After only 2 days of treatment and asessment he was deemed okay and referred to the substance abuse program. They discharged him with a promise of being readmitted 1 and 1/2 half days for a fee of $250.00. He kept his promise and when he got there the fee turned into $750.00 cash and thats with insurance. Im sickened and would not recommend Harbor Oaks to anyone for mental or substance abuse treatment.

Harbour Oaks was an extremely important factor in my being sober today. They gave me support, treated patients with respect, and gave me plenty of tools to use on the outside. They are truly a blessing! It was very beneficial. Sober almost 10 months now
