Peer-to-Peer Interactions

Philosophy

The John Volken Academy is a long-term residential rehab that follows a therapeutic community model to treat alcohol and drug addiction. The facility believes that peer-to-peer interaction, support and accountability is crucial when it comes to recovery. The Academy also helps individuals make healthy lifestyle changes while encouraging them to further their educations and/or career paths. Led by a team of addiction professionals, healthy-living specialists and psychologists, clients are guided through four “essential elements” for a successful recovery (the cause, sufficient time, a new lifestyle and necessary tools). Once completed, clients (who are referred to as “students” at the Academy) graduate as responsible, contributing members of society, with the will and the tools to become the best that they can be.

Meet The Staff

John Volken
Founder

John is often asked about his charitable work. His answer is simple “Helping others has brought me tremendous joy and satisfaction. I believe that once we have provided for our families, we should then work for the good of all; whether it be the arts, amateur sports, public office … whatever you may choose. There are so many opportunities to make this a better world. Personally, I am motivated by Matthew, chapter 25, verse 40: In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

This place is the worst. The program directors use the addicts to line their own pockets. The managers lie to their customers. They sell rehab donations for cash. Managers were on drugs when I attended and someone even overdosed. I came here for help, none was given. Beware of this place.

My son will be graduating this program in a few months. Yes, it has been tough for him, and also me, as his parent. That being said, it makes me so proud to see the person he has become. He has had complaints along the way, but, I see that as unavoidable. He spent a lot of years as an addict, and no help for his future. This program saved his life. Thank you JVA!

My son has been at the Welcome Home Ranch for 4 months now and it feels like he has already learned a life time of change. The biggest one being that he likes who he is sober and he experiencing lasting joy and a newfound zest for life. He works hard, he plays hard and meanwhile his brain is forming lasting pathways to a fulfilling, amazing life. If you are really ready to purge yourself of the pain of addiction this is the place that will offer relief. Go in with the right attitude and willingness to put forth real effort and you will not fail!

I write this with some reservations because I want to believe that the Volken Academy has the best interests of its “students” at heart. However, a noble enterprise in its inception, in our case at least, been less than transparent in its execution of its mission. My son’s recent brief experience at the facility earlier this year in Surrey (Vancouver) British Columbia is troubling on several levels. Most disturbing was the institution’s failure to respond to reasonable questions concerning the wildly inconsistent emails I received in the aftermath of his departure. My son has asserted that he left due to his concerns about the misrepresentations that were made to him as well as the “customers” of the furniture delivery operation that he was placed in charge of. In his personal case, he was kept on the road so much that the opportunity for the promised counseling practically evaporated and meals were often missed altogether. In the case of the furniture delivery duties, he informs that he was often sent out on deliveries with foreknowledge that some of the items they were to deliver did not comply with the order of the customer. My son claims he was instructed to misrepresent what the items were, try to ignore any complaint if the nonconformance was discovered, to the extent he could, and to place “fake” calls back to the warehouse in an ostensible but actually deceptive apparent attempt to rectify the matter if the customer persisted. In a worst case scenario, the Volken Academy is engaged in a fraud, in a best case scenario it may be characterized as a misunderstanding. As a practicing lawyer of 40 years I am measured in my review of the matter as my son is indeed an addict which brings along with it associated credibility problems. However, in my attempt to investigate the matter, the inconsistent self-serving emails from JVA, their refusal to return his personal property, and their absolute refusal to engage in any type of productive dialogue with me raised my suspicions. Should you want to learn more about my family’s experience with JVA, please feel free to contact me at tasofo@msn.com or 703-201-7632.

Do NOT allow your loved one to enroll in this program. I attached my phone number to add validity to this review. If you have any questions, feel free to call me. I would love to give you an honest review of this facility. The founder is not qualified at all to have people's lives in his hands. What makes this dangerous is that he makes unilateral decisions without having the humility to accept the feedback of others. Once your loved one is a 'student' they will be brainwashed and any communication with them will be filtered by other students. There is no one on campus qualified to make decisions. It is an absolute nightmare. Call me if you'd like more details. Avoid the John Volken Academy at all costs!!

I attended the volley academy for over 6 months. The only positives I\'ll give it is that it\'s not a hostile environment nor gang-related. Well be prepared to work tirelessly for 6 days a week over 48 hrs of work. It\'s student run... one program director is super cool and nice. However the British fellow is a really awful who looks miserable and mad all the time. Don\'t be fooled by the 2 years. Graduates relapse arguable more than those that left after a year. You\'ll eat expired food that will mess with your digestion. You can\'t make any education or classes until your there for over a year. No they don\'t pay for it. Keep looking. This place does the whole bait and switch. Trust me. These are the master manipulators.
