I went to Sundown Ranch on Oct 8, 2018. It was a very positive and Spiritual experience. Most of the staff were amazing and the Administrators was especially kind and compassionate when my bi-polar mania kicked in. Sundown is not a dual-treatment facility so it was problematic. There was one upper management who was very controlling and condescending that I left after only 8 days. I was not court ordered, so they could not stop me. Fortunately I have stayed sober, but I was especially fragile during those first days, and she was very cruel. My counselor was having personal issues, so our group was left to run itself after the first 5 days. That too was catastrophic. We were all lost, and one girl decided that she was in charge, being manic at the time didn't help, because I wasn't going to take any crap from anyone. This girl was your classic bully. I stood up to her, and she didn't like it. It was not the kind of therapy that one would expect in a treatment center. Aside from those situations, I would have given MC Ranch 5 stars. Sometimes you just have too many Chiefs and not enough Indians. But hey, I am still sober, and kudos to the athletic Director... You were my saving grace when I couldn't hardly sleep (mania). You are so professional , so respectful, and so COOL!!!! I will NEVER ever forget you. I do wish that the Ranch allowed you to mingle with former residents. I would love to have you come and chill at our house on the Ocean... ugh!

My counselor was a bully! I was not allowed to talk about what was bothering me. I had bedbugs in my room. They refused to call my roommate who left earlier that day to tell her. They made me sleep in the same room they fumigated that same morning!

Heads up. My brother went to the Sundown Ranch on a 21 day program. The first day as soon as he checked in, sat down his belongings in his room and was whisked off to Orientation someone promptly went in his room and stole his clothes and cigarettes. When he went to the director of the facility they told him it 'must be his karma' and to 'handle the theft with grace'. That was it. Apparently everyone knows there is a common and rampant issue with theft in the facility, however they chose to do nothing. No cameras. I would bet it's staff committing the thefts since they know when a person checks in, what room and where they will be at all times. Even worse, the 'group' meetings allow people to use racial slur's like it's nothing. The 'N' word is tossed around by the white residents so often and effortlessly you know it's just part of who they are as a racist. The facilitator completely ignores it as if they too find it normal to use racist and derogatory words and do nothing to discourage or shut down vulgar racist behaviors. In a nutshell, this place, while it may offer a good program and treatment plan for some is not a good place as far as treating people with human decency and dignity. I would not recommend this facility.

Good
Hard-core AA-based treatment with a confrontational edge, so not good for addicts with a history of trauma. Counselors vary widely in the depth of their knowledge; some think their own life story is all the training they need, and some are better educated. There's a lot of negativity. Most of the program ignores 21st-century addiction science but may be effective for addicts with religious backgrounds. All in all, the kind of addiction treatment that produces 90 percent relapse rates. Keep looking.

My son graduated from Sundown almost two weeks ago and I attended their Family Therapy Weekend and I am so impressed with this program!! I learned so much about the nature of the disease of addiction and how to recognize that addicts/alcoholics need help, not condemnation. My son is using the knowledge that he gained while there i.e. he has a sponsor, attending daily AA meetings, working the 12 steps and in general working his recovery program. Only time will tell what the future holds for him, but for the first time in a long time, he feels like he can have a future sans drugs or alcohol. The staff, from counselors to housekeeping to cafeteria crew, were amazing! I highly recommend Sundown to anyone wanting to change their lives, including the loved ones of the addicts. Thank you so much Sundown M Ranch!

Loved it because they made me see things a lot clearer and how not everything you think is taking you to this place of drug use but rather an addiction that can be treated and corrected with the effort you put in...

My son attended Sundown M Ranch. While they have the staff / patient ratio of 1/8 that is required by the State of WA, the staffing was inadequate for the youths that were there. My son was bullied by the other boys for the fact that his use on intake was much less serious than theirs and that he hadn't been charged with a felony. He also felt peer pressure to bully every newcomer that came in. So it was like prison with the cruel pecking order that is established when there is a lack of leadership. The boys weren't supposed to go into each others' rooms but they did all the time. He didn't open a bottle of shampoo that I left with him because another boy had his shampoo urinated in. He couldn't tell the staff what was going on without being labeled a snitch. He was afraid of getting jumped at night in his sleep. The staff was aware of the bullying but powerless to do much about it without more supervision or the boys coming forward, which they couldn't do without fear of retaliation. The food was good, comfort type food, but, as someone who is trained in nutrition, heavy on things that can encourage aggression. No fish or beans. My son's two counselors were lovely women. They need a younger male counselor(s); there is only one male counselor and he is pretty aggressively confrontational. I was glad we didn't get him. A lot of the boys come from homes without a father and need better role models. The senior staff were kind of emotionally hard. The setting is beautiful in the Yakima Valley but they aren't using the natural world at all. No garden, no hikes, very little outdoor play. They would have better outcomes if the kids spent more time outside. There was very little enrichment. The equipment for the ping pong table was shot, no library, games, or therapy dog. They relied heavily on groups, individual counseling and DVD's. I think having individual addicts in recovery come in to tell their stories would be great. The family program was really informative and really helped us. My son graduated successfully from the program but ended up in the ER after overdosing just a few weeks after the program. His behavior also got seriously worse after Sundown and I can't help but wonder if it was the influence of the kids he was with. We put him in a longer Wilderness program 6 weeks after his graduation. Sundown wasn't the right program for my son. I wish I had sent him elsewhere.

They were doing well with my loved one. They treated her mom very badly. It caused bad mothering which lead to serious problems after treatment. Effectiveness. They change the participant's relationship with addiction. That's a huge strength that definitely outweighs my petty complaints. They don't teach the participant how to use family supports, community supports, healthy friendships, or anything else to replace the stuff they're trying to get rid of.

Terrible place. Although it is clean I wonder just how good they disinfect their bathrooms as I got FINGERNAIL FUNGUS there! My son could not get outpatient there which he NEEDED because he was taking suboxone to curb the craving for opioids which is complete and utter NONSENSE! My beautiful son isn't here anymore. 8 AM 3 PM 7PM I’m 17Y/O and went here last summer, I stayed at the teen facility. My overall stay was good, rooms & bathrooms are nice and well cleaned. The food is great and their is a basketball court and plenty of sports equipment to play with which made my stay quite a lot better. I didn’t like the fact that one of the counselors refered to the patients and myself as “dope feins” This felt belittling and I hope if he’s reading this it’ will encourage him to not call his “patients” names such as dope fein, claiming he wouldn’t be one of our (a dope fiend’s) bitch. I always thought to myself “Are you trying to help us get better or worse?” with this specific counselor (he’s a male counselor) Overall however my treatment was effective and if you’re looking for a place with beautiful views and a quality temporary living space to clear you’re mind for detox, look no further. In the end it’s up to us (addicts) to decide what is best for our life and this facility will push you towards the right direction.

I'm writing this review now because I loved one went into rehab recently my experience was several years ago. But after going through finding a center for my loved one based on their specific needs I thought it was imperative that I write this review on Sundown M Ranch. Not only did they save drug filled miserable life that I walked in the door with, they gave me the ability in the tools to succeed to where I have a successful career a great son in college and I am able to battle the ups and downs of just life with the skills that they gave me when I walked out that door. It was comfortable was Secure I felt safe the food was food I didn't go there for the dining but the overall program I wish I could specifically break down what it was that connected with me but it works and it did work and it continues to work to this day and there's not one day that goes by in my life that I don't owe my entire being or a big portion of it to Sundown M Ranch. It was the most difficult thing I had to do in my life that I face to this day and it was my eight time at trying every rehab place around. I cannot Rave about them enough and then when I was close to suicidal right before going in I didn't have the funds I had been attacked money stolen to get in they got me on the bus and got me there they didn't care they just wanted me there. So all I can say is hats off they know their job and they do it very well. Your life is in jeopardy and I put my life in your hands again any day.

A family member went there and it was not good. Yes, there was a lot of intense group therapy but no one on one therapy. Don\'t expect any medical detox or even assistance. My family member was left to suffer with withdrawals. When he was finally able to get help, they drove him to the hospital. This facility does not address any other issues, such as mental health, which plays an important part in addiction/recovery. I would not recommend this facility to anyone, ever.

I am with my son today who has a 1pm chwck in time. The people on the phone were great and so I thought someone would be waiting to welcome him when we arrives and even know his name. Instead one person kind of asked from their desk what he needs and asked us to have a seat and someone will be with us. Its 1:17 and we are still sitting. Not a very good way to help someone feel special and that their life matters. :(

This place scarred me for life. The trauma i went through there at the hands of staff still affects me 6 years later. Do not go to this rehab or send your kid there. It\'s all a lie and you or your kid will most likely leave worse than before. Remember, there may not be as many bad reviews because of the stigma, or people just want to forget and move on, or the way that Sundown\'s \"treatment model\" is set up is to break you down into thinking you can\'t trust anything you think, say or do. Brainwashing is not the right term but the closest thing to what it is. This is not a place of heath and healing. After I went to a legitimate rehab that subscribes to science and holistic, modern medical treatment, I finally got better and was able to stay clean. Stay away from this place. There should be a criminal investigation and it should be shut down.

I was under the impression this place was also going to aid in detox. The nurse only comes once a week. I got there Monday and was told Wednesday I would meet with the nurse that is limited on what she can prescribe. One of the main reasons I wanted inpatient treatment is to help be comfortable bring detox. I was 100% disappointed. Expect for the food, it was good.

The success of treatment is, in my opinion, based on the patient's willingness to recognize and accept he/she has a disease, learn about and accept it will always be a part of their life, that they must OWN it, not blame others for it, and in so doing, reinforce what they learned in rehab by whatever means best suit them, i.e. AA, OSAT, etc.

My son was life-threatening ill with his long-team addiction when he attend Sundown the first time at 16. He was rebellious and beligerent and they NEVER GAVE UP ON HIM. The counselors were amazing and all staff professional. I felt so much shame, and hurt and fear and sorrow, and attending the family sessions let me know I wasn't alone in facing this horrible illness. I learned about enabling and co-dependency and I know they saved my son's life and my heart. When my son attended again at 21, he was more mature and came out of treatment with the knowledge of what it takes to overcome addiction and remain sober and drug free. Sundown is an amazing, life saving, place. I would recommend it to anyone I loved dearly and everyone else as well.

My son has been battling his addiction for twenty years. He had been to o Another rehab twice before an f d numerous detox facilities. Two years ago he called and asked for help, first time he's ever done that,so that was a sign he was ready. He was adamant about Sundown. My concern was it was only a ,21 day program, but I was so relieved he was seeking treatment I got the money together to help him out. He made financial arrangements with them to pay for part of the costs later. He's been sober two years now and living in an Oxford house in Seattle.I believe both of these places have saved his life...

This is a little long, but it is information I wish I would have had before sending my child to the youth facility. He was there twice and relapsed after both times. While he was there, some kids were kicked out for behavioral issues, so this is NOT the place to help them if there are any dual diagnosis issues or if your child is becoming independent and questions or pushes back in any way to authority. It is more like a juvenile detention center with teaching about addiction and recovery. The youth facility is not staffed to handle mental health issues, even if triggered by the drug abuse. The counselors are too busy to spend much, if any one-on-one time with the youth and many of the staff we observed or met were not very respectful to the youth in their interactions with them or in the group meetings. If they tell the kids addiction is a disease, they should treat the kids like that\'s what they have and stop demeaning them. It has been shown that interpersonal connection to family and community is vital to recovery and reduces recidivism. Sundown offers no assistance with after care unless you have no insurance and want to go a recovery house. They instruct these young people to get a sponsor, but don\'t help connect to one or show them how. Most youth aren\'t confident enough to do this on their own. It is a very lovely facility, but that\'s what they seem to care about. I\'d rather put my child in a less attractive facility and have personal, kind, respectful treatment with good after care advice. We have since done so and experienced much better results. I truly hope this helps you make your decision about an inpatient facility for your child.

He would surely have continued to be very unhappy and had a very short life or ended up in jail without the help. This facility does an excellent job. It has a reputation of being physically far removed from the stress of urban life. In the 1970's it was a renowned choice for treatment. I think that the counselors are now too young and less caring than those old timers who worked there in the 1970's, but that is just my opinion. I knew the founder of this center for well. My nephew said he had just about 0 one to one time with "his counselor". He spent most of his time with other patients and said no staff was available on Sat. and Sundays! We prayed so hard he would go to treatment. I realize his attitude was the problem. However, if he had had some time alone with the counselor they might have reached past his defenses. He said he never opened up in any group there. They could have done more. My nephew, the father of 6 children, is dying of alcoholism.

I don't have anything to compare it to because this is the only facility I've ever gone to, but I am still sober after almost 9 years, so I think it did something right. They instructed me how to go about finding AA meetings and outside counseling services once I left. This facility is a medium priced facility that has good staff. They are there to get you sober and healthy. I don't think addicts like myself need fancy centers that offer an abundance of therapies (horse, water, meditation, yoga, etc.) People are there to accept they have a problem and fix it.

Program is very supportive of the family and the patient. The mental health aspects can come into being addressed in aftercare. The most important aspect is getting off the chemicals long enough for any underlying problems to surface and be addressed as appropriate at that time. Strictly Chemical Dependency Based, doesn't recognize any mental health component to chemical dependency

SunDown was a wonderful treatment program. The counselor I had didn't sugar coat things, she gave it to me real... I've been sober for almost 4 years now, and I believe the structure given at SunDown, when I needed it most, is what really helped pave the way for me.

It saved my life. I went in a very sick person, they built me back up and I liked myself again. I felt that they really cared about my addiction and how to help me look at myself

My counselor was only a counselor in training that was going through a relapse herself. She left us after the first two sessions and never came back... I have been sober now for 9 years, through AA. I help give the spiritual tools for sobriety that way and suggest treatment at other facilities.

Sundown offers a great program. The facility is nice, food was good although it was mainly comfort food, and everyone who works there was so kind and a lot of them had been in the program. I really did not receive much one on one time with my counselor but if I needed her she was there for me. I would suggest to some of the staff that they get out of their big offices and interact with the patients a little more... I am 49 years old and went there on my own accord and paid for some of it out of pocket, I wasn't there to mess around.

Sundown was the life changer I needed, I would have been a statistic if not for Sundown. My whole family attended.

The treatment was inconsistent, my personal counselor very distracted and not accommodating, not enough leisure activities and lack of spirituality. I was personally not satisfied with my overall stay.

I was initially very skeptical about how effective a 21 day program could be, but they did an awesome job and they were very much focused on aftercare which I also thought would be the key to long term recovery.
