Meet The Staff

Amy Ruiz LSW CAC
Clinical Supervisor

I am the Clinical Supervisor of the Men’s Co-occurring Disorders Unit. After obtaining my Bachelors in Social Work at Bloomsburg University in December of 2001 I came to work at White Deer Run in January of 2002 and have been here ever since. I began my career at Allenwood as a counselor on the Women’s Co-occurring Disorders Unit and pursued my education and received my Masters in Social Work from Marywood University in May of 2005. It was then that I was promoted to a supervisor and worked on the adolescent unit until my recent move to the Men’s Unit. My experience here at White Deer Run has been primarily with patients with co-occurring disorders both on the women’s and the adolescent units. Dealing with addiction is never easy and it becomes more difficult when struggling with mental health issues. I believe that we need to combine the treatments of both in order to have the best chance of recovery. I love working with people and to be able to see them reclaim their lives by providing them with the proper treatment and support.

Brianne Shreck
Supervisor of the Women’s Co-occurring Disorders Unit

I am currently the Supervisor of the Women’s Co-occurring Disorders Unit at WDR of Allenwood. I came to WDR straight out of college as a Counselor Assistant. Since that time I have acted as a counselor, the lead counselor for the adolescent unit, the facility lead counselor, and now supervisor. I received my BS in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University and my MSW from Marywood University. I am also a Licensed Social Worker and a Certified Addictions Counselor. I cannot measure how much I have learned over the years at this facility. I am grateful for the experiences my co-workers and clients provide me on a daily basis. To see someone enter treatment who is hopeless, broken, and overwhelmed and watch them grow to someone who sees they have a future, can utilize personal strengths they never knew existed, and who is able to feel proud of themselves and their accomplishments is both rewarding and a testament to the work we do at this facility.

Kind staff. But some counselors had little to no control over groups. That was frustrating. If you feel ill up there, its hard to get medical attention as they basicly post signs for when you're allowed to see a doctor...(being sick monday but girls cant see nursing till wednesday) ashame. Overall clean, decent food.

Place is unbelievable after going through rehab 10 years rehab with family member want me to spend two days in family program just to see son unnecessary 10 years people know about it and are withholding my visitation rights because will not attend their family program. That is highly uncalled for people don't can't take 2 days off work just to go to a program that you know more about the they know. Don't teach them anything same thing over and over if family chooses not to go to their programmed they will not let you see your family or loved one at all. This is uncalled for threaten you to be threatens not to be able to see family member if don't attend program is not correct so prepared not to see your child if you don't do as they say. going to see if I can speak to someone about this even if I have to get a lawyer.

My significant other entered their program as an alcoholic. He.left using Imodium as his drug of choice!. What was the point?. Three months of our lives wasted! And they are using all the profits to expand the facilities on the hill. Oh, yes, if you ask to speak to authorities, none to be found. No.response to repeated phone calls so I went in person. I refused to.leave until someone answered my questions. Finally, came out and told me absolutely nothing. Today, I still.have no word from my loved one. He has neurological, physical, emotional, problems. Thank you, WDR for nothing! I would not send an animal there.

I made the poor choice to go here about 6 years ago and I have to say this was the worst facility I have ever seen. All of the poor reviews here are spot on. The counselors seem to be either burnt out or not trained in addictions and everything stated beforehand is a lie. There medical staff are terrible. If you truly want to get clean / need help please do not go here. I was lucky enough to get on the right path about a year after going here and have been clean for going on 5 years now but this place just made my addiction at the time worse. You are treated worse than a jail inmate. I was lied to multiple times and my counselor refused to see me. I could go on and on about this place. This will be most likely removed because they want to hide the truth but after all this time I remember the inexcusable conditions and the majority of the employees should be ashamed to call yourself helpers. I am now in the field myself and that being said can name 20 places off hand that are way better than this one.

NOT the place to be if you are considering voluntary rehab ! Court ordered addicts who aren't necessarily interested in treatment / rehabilitation make up a large portion of the centers ''clientele''. The Staff is overwhelmed and makes for far to much noise and confusion for anyone dealing with an addition who truly wants help !

I am so sorry this facility has been able to keep the facade of a true rehabilitation center. First and foremost the entire website is a lie. The medical attention is almost a mile away. . The techs are trained in CPR, however they are NOT allowed to touch the patients. All calls must be in front of staff and are usually every 10 days. As long as the insurance will pay.. you can expect to stay. It is a shame because there are great facilities out there fighting the good fight. For our lives! However this place became money hungry. Actual leaks within the walls for 5 days without attention. The older maintenance gentlemen says... there was a leak on the men's side last week, and the water has to go somewhere? The list is long. I advise those that have endured this "place" to contact their insurance because they paid for this experience. Also Do Not allow them to send you to there PHP. Partial hospitalization offers structured environments so patients are able to go home every day. Again money hungry.

First and foremost, the “counselor”, at Allenwood, that I spoke with regarding my brother’s discharge was very unprofessional and condescending. The facilities and staff that actually care about the patients are very hard to come by and WDR in Allenwood is not one of those places. The counselor failed to realize that he represents WDR of Allenwood and should be immediately terminated or closely monitored. Furthermore, WDR is supposed to work with individuals who have dual diagnosis, however as soon as the patient acts out in, due to their diagnosis, they’re “discharged by the administration.” You would think...... they would have some type of way to regulate and treat that patient. Sadly, they do not. My brother’s mental health needs were neglected This is my chief complaint. This facility is one of the worst facilities you could send your loved on to. I wish I would have read these reviews beforehand.

This place is a hole with very very very few that actually care about you. Things get stolen and fights all the time. You have to ask for sugar and peanut butter, the TV area was dirty as hell and you basically have to beg for phone calls and that's only when the counselors where there and that's from 10 to 4 after that no phones calls. There's no walks or anything to keep your mind occupied while your in detox except smoke cigarettes and talk about the drugs and prices you can get your shit at. The one nurse that took me and asked about my conditions and background was very caring I wish I would've got your name your were amazing and the counselor was nice too! T 2 counselors and the tubby waste at the end of the hall were wastes of space and didn't care about anything other than sitting there talking on the phone and barking orders. And the head charge nurse is a mean , I can understand they deal with all kinds there but if you deal with people like that all day you know which ones are caring.

Absolutely hands-down the worst place I've ever been. My third day detox they threw me into a building where I had to do 10 groups today. The food was terrible the staff was even worse I would not recommend it to anybody ever. They pick you up and take you there but what they don't tell you is that if you want to leave you got To walk home every person there was trying to figure way out. The white deer run will hold you and to your insurance will not pay another penny. So if your insurance covers three days you'll get a paper saying you successfully completed their program if your insurance will cover 50 days guess what? You're there for 50 days then you get the same paper the other person gotten three

Staff is horrible. Counselors are lazy, unprofessional and rude "Security" is the biggest asshole of the bunch. He treated my girlfriend like shit when she came to pick me up.. The patients do the cleaning so the place is nasty. What do you expect from a bunch of junkies. Think they know how to clean? The one exception is the medical staff. They were awesome. Bottom line, They are about making money. They had 5 roll calls a day. Very little actual focus on recovery. No book studies, just a bunch of bullshit talk. I had to wear my clothes for 12 days because they don't provide scrubs or anything like all other detox centers. I left early and they tried to keep from leaving.....money!!

She is missing then? I'm going to file a report to the police for a missing person I'm scared something happened to her unless she is still there that is not fair we are all worried. As a counselor and fierce advocate I am also a parent who has worked in both the mental health and addiction treatment services. My professional ethics and beliefs have been put to the test in the past several years while drudging through the multi-faceted issues surrounding this horrible health crisis epidemic. In seeing first hand the cracks in the system that NYS has for treatment options we looked into a program out-of-state. This was the worst experience in regards to medical monitoring and communication for individuals and families. My son was denied his medication suboxone in which his doctor had been prescribing him and was told he could be on this as he received his treatment there. Within the first 24 hours they refused him his medication which is worse than withdrawing from heroin. He was given the option to take methadone for withdrawals. I received a phone call from them stating that they were doing an intervention because he wanted to leave and I could talk to him. I was informed that when I spoke to him I had to tell him that he could not come home. They did not inform me of the refusal of his Suboxone and switch to methadone I only found this out through my persistence and numerous calls. I knew something was wrong for my son to want to leave as he had successfully completed a few programs in nys. I had to drive to Pa. To get him and was refused to get past the guard station and told to drive back to the bottom of the mountain and someone would bring him to me. Absolutely no ability for me to communicate with medical team in my calls or to even get through to a live person. They would not even allow him to use the phone only one time and I could not even hear him. There is no such thing as 28 day stay treatment. Mist insurance companies begin denying coverage after 9 days and you are able if at all to get 14 -21 day stay. These places are raking in the money and only drug court programs are allowed the 28 day stay. Communication with front desk operating teams speak in a condescending tone and hang up on you if they are challenged with questions they cannot answer. Relentlessly, I continued to advocate for my son in hopes to get to the root of the oroblem. This facility like many others including the ones I work for have a method behind the madness. It\'s all about the money to keep their beds full and promote vivitrol or other medications that pharmaceutical companies make billions of dollars on. A very sad experience for most as the same people cycle through over and over again. I don\'t have the answers but I do stand tall in fighting for change. I opened up an outreach program myself to offer awareness and education and speak at schools and in communitues. I\'ve also petitioned 7 Senators in NYS to get Casey\'s law into legislation. With over 7,000 signatures we are still fighting the fight. Many of these treatment programs are now such as this one, run by the healthcare industry that\'s billing and covering up the labyrinth of this sick epidemic. Oh and btw..the discharge paperwork he had never documented he brought his own prescribed suboxone but listed the other two meds he brought. I am filing a formal complaint with the state . I am very disappointed and glad my son is home safe. We will continue to fight for better treatment facilities. There is hope.

My boyfriend currently in treatment so cant review the effectiveness at this point but on other points, agree with other reviewers---no contact with anyone there including my man. Got about (3) 5 minute calls with him to date and he is being released on friday....people in jail get more phone access than the patients!! No mail received on weekends and i believe they only can send mail on wednesdays ... ?????? His family & myself have left several msgs w/ counselor and were not returned, and i have left msgs on general voicemail for him & he was never told.... As for the visitation, only offered once entire stay & family has to go thru entire day & half of \"group\" family member seminar on addiction & sharing our stories & understanding addiction....this would have benefitted me if it was held within days of his admittance ... thats when i needed to share, vent, learn because that was when i was beside myself & full of questions..not after 20 days of him being there already...then they shld have u come back the morning of visitation for a couple hrs to refresh it all before actual visitation.

I would not recommend this place to anyone. We sent our son for drug rehab and he ended up leaving 4 days later. The place is very dirty. Bathroom and shower areas are disgusting. The 4 days he was there he received no therapy and did not see a counselor . All they were interested in was billing my insurance company. My son ended up going to a different facility for his drug issues.

I\'ll will forever be grateful to the staff at White Deer Run. My son spent 2 weeks at this basic facility in beautiful surroundings. While in detox, everyday my son wanted to leave - and everyday a dedicated counselor presented information that helped him make a choice to stay. I\'ll never forget the compassion of the staff that allowed me to bring my son\'s mandolin to the facility and helped him begin the journey of trying to get clean following the death of his father.

I have to totally agree with 3 other reviewers - my husband\'s counselor NEVER returned my calls and when she finally did, she was rude, condescending and clueless. She couldn\'t effectively answer any of the questions I had. And getting involved in the family sessions took an act of Congress. My husband was being discharged before they even called me back to get into the sessions! The counselor told me I should have gone after his second week there - well not easy to do when nobody returns your calls! If they are going to stress how important family is, then they need to treat family with importance!

I agree with a lot of the other reviews, returning phone calls is TERRIBLE! It was my understanding at Family day that family is the most important part of recovery. Well they sure don\'t show it. I have made numerous phone calls to counselor about loved ones progress, etc. with it taking days to return the phone call. One time I actually got to talk to her but the second time...it was about a two minute conversation with a promise she would call me back. she never did. My son is being discharged tomorrow and the only way I knew that was from a court paper. I have emailed asking what time to pick him up and I still don\'t know!! I am not impressed at all. The counselor from Willamsburg white deer run took great interest in keeping family updated with progress. I would never send a loved one here again for this reason!

This place is a joke. My brother was there two weeks and he was medically discharged. Upon speaking with his counselor by myself and his intensive case manager at home, they could not give us a definite reason for the discharge. The place is extremely over crowded. Patients are locked in their rooms over night. They have nothing for patients to do. They just sit around. The group therapy is a joke as there is no staff atteneding. It was left up to the patients to carry on the therapy. This place is a nightmare!

It is one of the only local facilities available. it is low budget, low technology and outdated. I think White Deer Run in Allenwood is a facility that has been left to decay and had little capital improvements. However, since they are one of the only in the area, you have to take what you can get.

If you are serious about recovery this is a good place to stay at. The detox program is very effective and all the counselors do their best to keep you happy. Its in the middle of nowhere so people aren't able to leave A.M.A. easily. Most of the counselors are book trained and have no experience with recovery themselves.

I knew between the second or third day that this would not be a good experience but an experience marked by mental stress and exhaustion with little positive outcome due to a number of factors which I would say is systemic. First of all be warned that the facility is not clean and the food offers little nutional value....its all processed and canned goods and all the juices are from concentrate with a low protein high carb/sugar diet. During my stay i was priomised 5 one on one sessions, which is low to begin with and i got 2 which were pretty much back to back. The counclier who i was set up with who i did like was reassigned to a different unit and i had got reassigned another one who never saw me once. She was correct when she would introduce herself as the head sick counciler for sure but to use that to not do her job and be held accountable when i came to this facility to get help isnt right. I gave it two stars for effectiveness to be fair since if you are the type to work well in large social gathers where is it peer oriented and feel comfortable sharing around 60 plus people you may do better but i take time to open up and felt very alone and by myself and sinking into a depression. Just a word of a advice dont expect a comfy experience here at white deer run...expect neglect and a spin zone for anything that they lack such as a employees, clean enviroment, theft, 16 to one one the counciler, techs that cant answer any of your questions, condesensing speeches...its really the culture of the facility is all i can blame it on and a lack of an overall professionalism.

A comfortable detox. A knowledgeable staff and alot of experience staff that are in recovery themselves. It's a large facility so there's not a whole lot of time for one on one counseling. If your going there for opioid detoxification they don't medicate you until around noon the next day. Depending on how busy it could be as early as 1030am the next day. So basically be prepared to be sick until then. But when you do finally get medicated most of your symptoms are minimal if not gone depending on your habit.

They had excellent staff that worked with you and were very accommodating. They had excellent counselors that helped you with specific problems you may have been having at that time. They also helped place you somewhere after your 28 day stay. This facility followed a strict schedule. You were to be at groups at a certain time and if you were not, you were held accountable. They followed a 12 step program and had groups all day long that you were to be at unless you were sick or with your counselor. They also offered excellent medical treatment.

My fiance was there for 2 days and it was not at all like she was told it would be. Communication with family is very poor, (unless the patient has walked off the grounds, in which case they did call) I had to call 5 times over 2 days to find out if she was still there or had walked out. Never returned any messages. No family visitations unless scheduled with counselor (very rare visits, NONE on Christmas.) My questions were not answered when I dropped her off, I had to call the next day and talk to the front desk to get any answers at all. Intake is not at all organized, there was no one to tell us what we needed to do to get her checked in. It is a very pretty little compound though, lots of trees and nice scenery. There\'s a little shop with snacks and cigarettes as well, which is nice.

The absolute worst rehab. No structure. The patients run their own meetings. If you're lucky a counselor might run one group a day. They have the audacity to wonder why so many people leave against medical advice. Complete joke. The only thing you will receive is time away from the drug of your choice. They are absolutely all about getting as many beds filled they can for the money. There are staff members that do genuinely care but when you have 50 plus patients and three counselors, they don't have time to do their job. One patient waited 31 days before he ever saw his counselor for a one on one. Please if you want to be educated properly about your addiction, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!

My boyfriend just left allenwood white deer rehab 4 days ago. He did get sober but saw counselor 1hour the 30 days there. Maybe if he got the counseling he was suppose to he wouldnt be in an abusive relationship with someone that drinks. Says she wont but cant stop on own. He mite of chosen to be with the one and only person that truely cares for him and doesn\'t drink at all. Ive called there numerous times got no call back from counselors at all. They are just in it for the money. How sad is that. You think you are sending them to get the help so much needed only to find out not true. I wish counselor would of called me or responded to my letters and helped him. Now hes on his own doing out patient. Dont send your loved one there. Its sad when they cry out for help noone wants to help them.

THIS PLACE IS TOTALLY AWFUL!!!! Not a place for someone who is seriously trying to help themselves! My wife went there for a supervised detox from over prescribed Xanax. They insured me that I would be kept in the loop and updated on her recovery. All were lies. When you call there all you get is voicemail . Then it takes a day or two to get a call from a counseler , who I found out later never even met her to call. When I could finally talk to her I found out how bad it was( not withdraw talking) and I picked her up after 4 days. Luckily I found a psychologist to continue and I now have my drug free wife. All the grouped at this place are patient run with no true counseling. Do not go here

They need more holistic options; however, it was affordable and had a great 12-step program.

They took any personal or mental disorders into consideration. They made it top priority to empower the patients. Instead of making us feel bad or stupid, we were free to talk about any issue every day.

This has got to be one of the worst rehabs out there! Do NOT go here or send your teens here! It's absolutely awful. Let's start with basics: The food is horrendous and super caloric so expect to gain some weight. Some counselors are rude and not fit to work with such vulnerable people. ... The rules are ridiculous. An example would be - only water and cough drops during group. No coffee, tea, or juice even if it's in a bottle to avoid spilling. There are groups all freaking day but NO one-on-one. There\'s just so many things wrong with this place. I hope it gets shut down.

Staff is mostly in recovery so they are knowledgeable about what the clients are going through. Teaches structure and responsibility by having a set schedule throughout the day Not enough counselors for the amount of clients The food was not that great but the kitchen manager said they did the best they could with their budget. All in all the facility was adequate in doing what their intended to do, giving us a place to rest and keeping us as safe as possible. Being my stay was funded by the state and free i cant really complain, ive made it almost 8 months now without a drink or drug so whatever happened or whatever i heard there had enough impact to keep me clean and sober

I have been to this facility twice. I have been clean and sober for two years now. Just like anything else that comes with the territory you get out what you put in to it. This facility is very nice and clean with an awesome view of the mountains. It's an open setting where you have to go outside and to other buildings for meals and groups so that's a nice part once your feeling up to it. You can see the Allenwood federal prison from there but it makes you realize where you could be if you weren't getting help. Also the food was pretty good considering it is a rehab. I would definitely recommend this place to people. Very strict on the rules compared to others. Also the food was pretty good and once your done with detox if needed you have access to the gym with weights, exercise equipment, and other non physical activities like crafts and meditation. One of the main weaknesses I seen was the staff. Now the councilors were great but there are just regular people that work there that they call Techs.

This institution is absolutely horrible. It is the aqivelent of a state prison and I\'m not even just talking about the food.I could go on and on about white deer run but I\'m going to keep it short and sweet.. Do not go to or send your children here you will regret it and you will not be able to talk to them and if you do it will be on speaker phone, the techs will add their 2 cents to everything you conversate about. But if you don\'t take my advise and find another rehab when you attend this place you will learn for yourself and when you decide to leave I wish you luck they will give you the run around for days and try everything in their power to keep you there. They have all bases covered when it comes to collecting every dollar they can. I wouldn\'t send my worst enemy there . Please take my advise and find somewhere else .

I thought someone dropped me off in the pits of heck. While I was detoxing and so sick they brought me into a meeting and were grilling me on how I was gonna pay. All while I was detoxing off of 6 mg of klonopin. Staff is extremely uncaring. I was so sick one night and told one of the staff nurses I thought I was dying. They ignored me then shined a flashlight into my room on my bed all night long. The counselor if that\'s what u call her was more concerned about details of my sex life then my medical detox. I was not detoxed properly at all. I came home and spent 2 months in m local hospital where I was treated way better than I was at white deer run. Do not go there. U will regret it

I made the call there on a speaker phone, with a witness. Inquired about Detox only. Information was taken, funding was approved immediately. Arrived 2 days later for detox and 5 days later was handed a wristband for transfer to their Rehab unit. Upon refusing to transfer I was discharged AMA (Against Medical Advice) I was advised they dont do \"Detox Only\". A call was made to my contact who confirmed the initial conversation to be admitted ther. If they dont do detox only I feel I should have been advised so. ery misleading and in my opinion was more about the funding than my well being as I had explained on the phone I was already under a doctors care, had already been to rehab prior and simply needed to detox and would and currently am following up with my physician.

Worst facility ever! Counselors are horrible, no communication skills at all. I called this facility for two days straight and no one ever answered the phone. Dirty, dirty, dirty! Meals were terrible! So many patients and not enough counselors. Groups ran by people who are former patients and sober for only months. I sent my child thinking it was a safe place. To all parents: Please do not consider this place to get help for your children to get the help they need! I wish I could tell my insurance to not pay. Nightmare!

My husband was here and had the absolute worst experience of his life. No one on one counseling except 1 time in the 12 days here was there. Mail never gets in or out in a decent time, not to mention, they take you to store at like 10-11 and don\'t get mail until after 1. So if you received money from a loved one or needed stamps to send a letter you had to wait. When my husband decided to leave because ... the counsellors gave him the run around when it is his choice to be there. This place is horrid. Just he was better off getting clean elsewhere because this place is a freaking joke!!

Treatment was based on medicating and abstinence. It was draconian in nature and lacked any holistic therapies. They had zero family involvement and discharged my sister without contacting family or her spouse. She left on a mini van back to her home in Buffalo. They lack a holistic approach to treatment. This is a for profit facility that was very eager to snatch my sister up. She has excellent health insurance and went in voluntarily. She is a 49 year old professional women who struggles with alcoholism. I feel as if she was completely taken advantage of by the head hunter in our area who processed her through the system and fed us many lies. During her 30 day stay, only two unprofessional calls were shared between her counselor and her family. All attempts made by family to get answers were met with total indifference and disregard.

Overall, if you truly want to stop using drugs, making the call and actually going to the facility is a huge step. It doesn't matter what we, as recovering addicts think of the facility, because we'll say it sucked. It matters what you put into your stay there. Amazing techs and good lectures. However, they could have used more one on one counseling.

The facility is made up of several unites or buildings which you must walk back and forth to throughout the day. The weather can be a problem or hassle. I feel the groups are too large-you don't get enough individual attention. Has a dual program for mental/drug issues as well as just drug issues. Sleeping facilities/rooms are way too small and crowded.
