First Step Center's mission is to provide client-centered, trauma-informed, holistic treatment utilizing evidence based practices in order to address an individual's recovery process. We strive to guide each individual, including their family, throughout the recovery process with the goal of lifelong sobriety and healthy living. Tucked in the stunning Sonoran Desert, FSC offers residential treatment, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient recovery programs. Upon entering treatment, each client receives a dual diagnosis assessment and an individualized treatment plan. At First Step Center, we treat the individual and create a custom program based on individual needs. In addition, what sets us apart from other centers is our holistic approach in treating the mind, body, and spirit as well as offering a comprehensive nutritional program and dual diagnosis treatment. We believe recovery happens by identifying and treating all underlying issues. During treatment, we work to support our clients and inspire hope in them, so they can rediscover themselves without the veil of substance and be confident in their own recovery. The goal of our treatment programs, addiction, and trauma specialists is to provide the personalized, intensive, and effective continuum of care necessary to bring healing into our client’s lives. We believe that our team’s expertise in the treatment of addiction and trauma-related issues will greatly benefit you or your loved one in overcoming addictions, trauma, and co-occurring disorders. Within the First Step Center program, we believe everyone is capable of a fulfilling and lasting recovery. Through evidence-based addiction and mental health treatment, our residents can gain healthier lives and establish fulfilling and loving relationships. For clients suffering from moderate to severe addiction, our all-male residential facility is monitored 24 hours daily and offers 10 beds and plenty of luxurious amenities. In most cases, clients are recommended to stay the full 30 days. In addition to the aforementioned, our services include: - Individual, group, and family therapy - Family Systems Therapy - Nutritional and Amino Acid Therapy - 12 Step programs - Trauma Informed Care (SE, EMDR, DBT) - Brain Spa (CES, weighted blankets, Chi machine)

    Shawna Chandler, MSW, LCSWExecutive/Clinical Director
    Originally from Wyoming, Shawna Chandler, MSW, LCSW, serves as the Executive/Clinical Director for First Step Center, offering its team and clients 20 years of experience working within the addiction and mental health industry as well as 10 years of leadership experience. Prior to joining FSC, Shawna opened and ran her own residential treatment center in Wyoming. Shawna completed her master’s degree at Florida State University and began specializing in clinical social work. Having realized her passion for addiction and mental illnesses early on, Shawna began her journey providing clinical service to a diverse variety of populations in rural communities and residential treatment centers. Shawna is dedicated to providing high-quality care to meet the unique needs of clients and their families. With extensive training in trauma, EMDR, dialectical behavioral therapy, acceptance commitment therapy, family-focused therapy, mindfulness, ego states psychotherapy, and leadership, Shawna provides FSC’s clinical team with intuitive, expert training and supervision.

    Dr. Matt Klein, DO Psychiatry, ABPN Board CertifiedMedical Director
    Originally from north central Colorado, Dr. Matthew Klein, D.O. serves as the Medical Director for First Step Center. Among his other contributions, Dr. Klein brings 10 years of experience working with treatment programs for both substance abuse and eating disorders to First Step Center. Dr. Klein’s journey to working within the addiction treatment field began as an adolescent, when a strong passion for substance abuse and the power of recovery was instilled within him after having watched a family member suffer from addiction. After graduating from medical school at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Klein completed a residency and fellowship from the Maricopa Integrated System in Phoenix in adult, child, and adolescent psychiatry. Prior to medical school, Dr. Klein worked for years in a youth substance abuse treatment center. During this time, he gained a profound understanding of the significant role relationship restoration plays in successful recovery.

According to First Step Center's website, clients have access to a tennis court, walking nature trail, basketball court, swimming pool, horse-shoes, frisbee golf, and putting green. The center has room for 10 men.
