Rehabs 360 Guide

Set in the Sonoran Desert, northeast of Scottsdale, Ariz., Promises Scottsdale is a gender-separate treatment center for individuals struggling with addictions, intimacy disorders, as well as primary and co-occurring mental health disorders.

Programs include residential care, an executive program for men, professionals drug rehab, and addiction aftercare. Although the facility does not provide detox on-site, it coordinates medical detox services through a local provider on an outpatient basis as the client stays at the Promises Scottsdale residence.

Within the state, the center is among 22.9 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that provide residential, non-hospital care, 58.9 percent with programs for clients with co-occurring disorders, 46.6 percent with specially tailored programs for adult men, and among 48.1 percent with specially tailored programs for adult women.

At Promises Scottsdale, residential drug rehab is filled with activities from morning to early evening. Individual and group sessions include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). The program also features alternative and experiential approaches, such as mindfulness, relaxation, massage therapy, yoga, and acupuncture. Creative therapies involve art and music as well as psychodrama. Promises Scottsdale also emphasizes fitness and proper nutrition as important components of recovery.

In addition, clients participate in 12-step groups and educational sessions on topics such as spirituality, relapse prevention, and relationship building. There also is a family program that includes weekly groups. As needed, clients engage in dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders through EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) and other trauma-focused therapies. A residential stay typically lasts between one and three months

The center also offers a specialized residential drug treatment for executives, as well as a program for licensed professionals, such as physicians, airline pilots, attorneys, and entrepreneurs. Private and discreet, treatment addresses the unique needs of these professional groups, which are subject to high job stresses and expectations that may enhance their risk of addiction and relapse.

Continuing care is an important facet of programs at Promises Scottdale. The center offers ongoing support in the form of alumni and aftercare groups, including regular events and meetings.

Within the state, Promises Scottsdale is among 21.4 of substance abuse treatment facilities accredited by The Joint Commission. According to the facility’s website, the treatment team is comprised of credentialed addiction and mental health specialists, including physicians, psychiatrists, licensed therapists, and licensed addiction counselors. Some clinicians have a particular focus on healing trauma.

At Promises Scottsdale, accommodations are described as “home-like and comfortable.” Facilities offer shared and private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, kitchens, gathering spaces, recreational areas and appointments, views of nature, and more. Meals are provided by professional chefs.

At the time of this writing, five former clients of Promises Scottsdale submitted mixed feedback about the facility to Rehabs.com: two highly favorable impressions and three negative. The alumni praised the staff and the treatment they received, reporting they'd recommend the program to others. “This program is amazing. The therapists are some of the best I’ve ever seen and extremely caring,” one alum wrote.

However, negative alumni criticized the lack of respect shown to clients, organization, professionalism, and success achieved. “Each and every one of my house mates relapsed after leaving this program. The CR\’s are immature teenagers,” one alum wrote. “Sadly, my time there was a waste of time and money.”

On secondary sites to date, Promises Scottsdale received conflicting coverage: three out of five stars based on 10 reviews on Google; two stars based on nine reviews on Yelp (some overlap with Google); and two five-star reviews and two-star review on Facebook, which the organization may manage. Satisfied alumni praised the program, results achieved, and the staff. “Excellent Program - Saved my life!” MIke wrote on Google, while Kristina on Yelp added: “Promises was the best treatment center I’ve been to. My experience was very positive because of the amazing staff that supported me along my journey.”

However, some reviewers disagreed with this assessment and reported experiencing manipulative and unethical practices. “Highly unethical. Do not go here. They have owed me a refund of $3000+ for three months. They have not returned calls, emails, letters.” and Mark on Yelp added: “My horrific experience was filled with broken promises, horror, confusion and disbelief.”

To date, three loved ones submitted mixed opinions. Two satisfied loved ones awarded a mix of top five stars and four out of five stars for several survey metrics, such as facility cleanliness and upkeep and staff experience and training. They also gave four stars each for family participation and likelihood to recommend and appreciated the well-qualified staff and support given to family members. That said, they both raised the issue of high cost with Rehabs.com. “I know you get what you pay for but this is a little expensive but worth it in the end,” a loved one wrote.

The unsatisfied loved one was critical of the facility's staff and communication. "Staff just did not care about the patients, no communication with parents, or even each other. Different answer depending on who you speak to. Seem more concerned about insurance coverage than recovery.”

Promises Scottsdale works with multiple insurance providers. Preferred providers include Aenta, Cigna, Compsych, Humana, and United Healthcare. The facility is in-network on some PPO insurance policies and accepts out-of-network benefits from others. The two reviewers polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing both rated the center’s affordability three out of five stars.
