Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield

BCBS of Arkansas: Health Insurance for Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers

In a weekly address given by the Arkansas Governor in 2021, it was noted that a 55% increase in the number of drug overdose deaths had occurred in 2020 over 2019 due to an increase in the potency of fentanyl.1

Potent and cheap illicit drugs like fentanyl worsened the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The press release noted that “a packet the size of one serving of artificial sweetener will hold a gram of fentanyl which is enough to kill 500 people.”1

The address encouraged those struggling with a substance use disorder, such as opioid use disorder, to ask for help. Drug and alcohol rehab can get people on the path to recovery and to a greater quality of life. As the Governor stated, plenty of people are willing to help.1

Addiction treatment programs are beneficial for anyone struggling with drug and/or alcohol abuse or addiction. Drug and alcohol rehab is a long-term process and recovery can look different for everyone since no two people have the same exact needs or situation. Typically, when an individual enters rehab, it will occur in stages that includes detox, treatment, and aftercare, if necessary, and meet the specific needs of the patient.

Self Assessment

Substance Abuse Assessments for Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Arkansas

Admission into a drug and alcohol addiction treatment program is an important part of the treatment process. The intake and evaluation components are key in determining each patient’s individual needs to design an appropriate, effective treatment plan. The treatment process should be comprised of detox, treatment, and aftercare, if necessary, and meet the specific needs of the patient.

Individuals will be diagnosed by a treatment specialist using the DSM-IV Diagnostic Criteria for Substance Abuse. Diagnosis of co-occurring disorders or dual diagnosis (having both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition) should also occur at the intake and evaluation stage to assess the addiction problem, general health status, living situation, and any other concerns.

Detox is the first step of the recovery process for individuals diagnosed with a substance use disorder. Detox will usually take 3, 5, 7, or 10 days, depending on the patient’s needs and situation. Medical detox provides evaluation and oversight by treatment professionals and involves the use of medication to relieve discomfort, taper off drugs or alcohol, and stabilize the patient. Information about rehab in Arkansas

AR Substance Abuse Facts

Arkansas is no stranger to substance abuse. Recent statistics show that:

  • In 2012, Arkansas had a higher rate of nonmedical use of prescription painkillers among people aged 18-25 than the national rate (12.9% vs. 10%).
  • The state also had higher rates of nonmedical use in those aged 26 and older compared with the national rate (4.3% vs. 3.5%).1
  • That same year, Arkansas was in the top 10 states for the number of prescribed opioid pain medications, with 116 prescriptions per 100 people.2
  • 113,000 people 18 and older had an alcohol use disorder in 2014-2015 in AR.3
  • In 2013, over 11,000 Arkansans enrolled in a state-funded alcohol or drug treatment facility.1

In 2014-2015, youth had higher rates of past-year depressive episodes, while adults had higher rates of past-year suicidal thoughts and past-year serious mental illness than the national average.4

Getting Addiction Treatment Help in AR

Addiction is a serious condition, and there’s no shame in reaching out for help. Several options are available, depending on your situation.

As you begin the process of selecting a program, think about whether you need to spend time away from your home environment or whether you need to be close to your loved ones. Also, consider how much your insurance will cover and how much you can pay out of pocket, if necessary.

Other factors to consider are:

  • What kind of therapies the program utilizes.
  • Whether you can receive detox services there.
  • Whether you need a program that offers medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction.
  • Whether the facility treats dual diagnosis conditions (if you’re suffering from a mental health disorder).

If you need help finding a recovery center, call us any time of day or night at .

Where Else Can I Find Help in AR?

Those who cannot afford rehab or don’t have insurance can look into free and low-cost rehab programs funded by states and nonprofits, though these programs can have long wait lists.

You can also find a program that charges based on a sliding scale or tap into alternative funding sources such as crowdfunding sites. Most programs also create payment plans so that you don’t have to pay off the entire bill at once.
