Rehabs 360 Guide

BNI Treatment Centers (BNI) is a physician-owned and operated residential treatment program for teenagers ages 12 through 17 struggling with substance abuse and other behavioral health issues. The CARF accredited program runs out of Agoura Hills, Calif., roughly an hour north of Los Angeles International Airport, and serves teens from across the country and around the world. It is among the 37 percent of California residential facilities.

Residential programming at BNI Treatment Centers is built to address a variety of conditions including anxiety, depression, bipolar, borderline personality, and oppositional defiant disorders, as well as Asperger’s syndrome, substance abuse, and addictions to processes like video games and sex.

The BNI curriculum itself is quite comprehensive. During any given week, teens may experience both group and individual therapy as well as evidence-based modalities like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mindfulness. Alternative therapies and activities like surf therapy, equine therapy, psychodrama, music/dance therapy, and art therapy are also mentioned on the center’s homepage.

Teens requiring medical detoxification are supported by a 14-day withdrawal stabilization program, in which time they’ll come up with a long-term plan and receive close medical attention from a medical doctor. BNI Treatment Centers is among the 21 percent of California facilities to offer adolescent services. Families are provided with guidance throughout the entire process.

BNI also works with representatives from each client’s school to help teens stay on track with their formal schooling. Tutoring services are available on-site for students requiring extra assistance.

BNI Treatment Centers is founded and operated by two medical doctors, a triple-board certified psychiatric physician and an adult and child psychiatrist, who collectively have more than 60 years’ experience in clinical settings. BNI is among the 28 percent of CARF accredited facilities.

While attending therapy groups and participating in activities, teens reside in a two-story home staffed 24 hours a day by a team of nurses and support personnel. Pictures published on the center’s website depict bright shared and private rooms, computer stations, a full kitchen, and an outdoor swimming pool. Meals are prepared regularly by a chef.
