Rehabs 360 Guide

Located in Agoura Hills, Calif., Inspire Malibu is a drug and alcohol rehab for adults who prefer a non-12-step recovery program. Treatment options include an inpatient program, various outpatient options, and several levels of on-site detoxification, including a detox-only program. Founded in 2011, the facility is distinguished by its personalized clinical therapy program and science-based approach. Treatment is also available for co-occurring disorders.

Therapy at Inspire Malibu integrates multiple disciplines including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). The facility also offers transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy for depression. Medication-assisted therapy (MAT) for opioid addiction utilizes Suboxone, a pharmacotherapy offered at 25.2 percent of rehabs in California, according to a 2017 SAMHSA survey.

Typically lasting between 30 and 90 days, Inspire Malibu's inpatient program is one of 440 long-term (30+ days) residential treatment programs in California (constituting 33.6 percent of all rehabs in the state). Outpatient programs differ by intensity and duration of treatment.

Day treatment runs for six to eight hours, five days per week, while an intensive outpatient (IOP) program takes place three days each week for three hours at a time. Outpatient detox may be accessed through an off-site health clinic. Clients who wish to remain in recovery after stabilization are also introduced to SMART Recovery meetings.

The staff includes a doctor who is board-certified in addiction medicine, two clinical psychologists, a licensed clinical social worker, a licensed marriage and family therapist, master’s-level counselors, licensed addictions counselors, a yoga therapist, a music therapist, an eating disorder therapist, and a registered dietitian.

Inspire Malibu is accredited by the Joint Commission, a certification held by 13.9 percent of rehabs in California.

Inspire Malibu offers two residential locations. The Agoura Hills houses serve as the main residential treatment facility, while the Malibu location overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is offered for clients who want a very upscale experience. Both locations have gourmet meals prepared by personal chefs and private rooms for an additional fee. Laptops and cellphones may be used during treatment, and all clients may utilize the facility’s membership to a local fitness center, which has a swimming pool.

The seven alumni reviews submitted to Rehabs.com to date indicated that the facility provided good treatment, counseling, and accommodations. Two former clients credited the facility with changing their lives, and all agreed that the living arrangements were top notch and the staff were compassionate and knowledgeable. "Inspire Malibu saved my life. I am so grateful for Dr. Mohammad and the Inspire Malibu staff for thoroughly treating my bipolar and heroin addiction," S.B. wrote in a representative review.

Two alumni surveyed on more granular metrics offered high four- and perfect five-star ratings for staff training and experience, counseling options, cleanliness, and holistic offerings. Complaints were minor, and included high cost and too much downtime.

Reviews elsewhere on third-party sites online at the time of writing are also mostly positive. Ratings from 10 reviewers on Google to date averaged 4.3 out of five stars.[1] On the facility's official Facebook page, which staff may manage, eight reviewers also contributed to a 4.3-star average rating.[2] A single reviewer on Yelp left a five-star review.[3]

The lone loved one polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave a mixed review. While the anonymous reviewer noted that the environment was beautiful and the staff provided effective medications and therapies, they also told Rehabs.com that the program was too lax overall and did not provide enough intensive on-site treatment. “My sister (and the other patients) had a surprising amount of free time outside of treatment,” the family member wrote. “The treatment sessions were sporadic and located outside the house. it seems like they should have had more on-site treatment and doctors/therapists since it was an inpatient facility.”

On Google, one loved one left a highly negative one-star review.[1] The reviewer, Robin, wrote: "They didn’t bring my family member to the hospital when they should have. This person, thank God, made it home, but has regular PTSD flashbacks of the treatment received."

According to the facility’s website, Inspire Malibu accepts private pay and all out-of-network PPO insurance plans. An option for no-interest financing is also available, and one former client surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing reported receiving a 50 percent discount.
