  • Dual Diagnosis/Co-occurring Disorders Treatment

These two terms describe a person who is not only addicted to drugs or alcohol, but also has a mental or emotional illness, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. Facilities that treat patients with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders provide psychiatric treatment in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.
  • Family Program

Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

Rehabs 360 Guide

Located outside of Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif., Anaheim Lighthouse provides a full continuum of treatment services for individuals struggling with substance abuse, co-occurring mental health conditions, and trauma. In addition to medication-assisted detoxification, the center offers residential treatment, a partial hospitalization program (PHP), and intensive outpatient program (IOP). It is one of only 15% of facilities in California that includes medical detox. Supportive programming for family members is also available.

Clients who begin their stay with detoxification can expect to receive medically-assisted treatment in a homelike environment with 24-hour monitoring. Once stabilized, clients may move on to the center’s residential program, which according to survey data submitted to Rehabs.com, may last up to 90 days.

Anaheim Lighthouse's programming is informed by 12-step principles and includes individual psychotherapy, group counseling, family therapy, process groups, and educational workshops.

Partial hospitalization, often used as a step-down option to residential care, includes similar treatment modalities but focuses on encouraging self-reliance. Clients enrolled in PHP spend six hours in treatment each day before returning to their homes in evening.

Intensive outpatient treatment is typically the next step leading up to discharge. In this stage, clients are connected to sober support groups, employment opportunities, and other community resources that aid relapse prevention. IOP includes three hours of treatment each day.

The center’s staff is led by a supervising clinical psychologist. According to the facility’s website, most clinicians are certified counselors or master’s-level therapists. Additionally, many staff members have personal experience with recovery. The 21 individuals polled on the the staff's level of experience and training praised the facility for this aspect of treatment.

According to the center’s website, the campus-like residential facility is located in a residential area of Anaheim. Clients share bedrooms and have access to a full kitchen, washer and dryer, and patio area. During their stay, clients may utilize a local gym and participate in meditation sessions and yoga classes.
