Action Family Counseling’s Intensive Outpatient Program provides services to those seeking assistance in maintaining sobriety in Bakersfield California. Through group work and therapy on an outpatient basis, participants are provided individualized treatment plans, drug testing, addiction education, diagnostic assessment, treatment advocacy, and discharge planning. Clients are also expected to participate in individual and group sessions on a regular basis. Loved ones are encouraged to assume an active role in individuals’ recovery by participating in family therapy sessions. The program stipulates a minimum of nine hours of weekly participation, including three weekly meetings. Headquartered in Santa Clarita, Calif., Action Drug Rehabs (also known as Action Family Counseling) provides a continuum of substance abuse treatment services in Ventura, Los Angeles, and Kern Counties. The Bakersfield location offers age-specific intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) for adolescents (ages 12 to 17) and adults struggling with chemical dependency, as well as co-occurring disorders. Residential care is also available for adults.


Before beginning treatment, clients may participate in an initial assessment to ensure IOP offers an appropriate level of care. According to the facility's website, Action Drug Rehabs' IOP typically involves programming that includes three-hour sessions held three days per week. IOP generally lasts three months.

To treat its clientele, IOP sessions typically involve process groups, educational workshops, and structured exercises. Along with an introduction to the 12-step model of recovery, sessions also focus on spirituality, relapse prevention, emotional well-being, and forming healthy relationships. Specialized sessions are also available to address co-occurring mental health disorders.

Along with group sessions, clients also meet with a counselor for family therapy once a week. Aftercare plans are developed prior to completing the program, which may include referrals to 12-step meetings, vocational training and educational opportunities, mental health clinics, and other community-based resources to support ongoing recovery.


The Action Drug Rehabs is accredited by the Joint Commission. According to the facility’s website, services are administered by a team of substance abuse counselors and therapists. The organization’s founder achieved sobriety about 40 years ago and has dedicated himself to working with those affected by substance abuse and mental health concerns.


The three alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date praised most aspects of the facility, particularly its staff. Two alumni polled on the matter offered perfect five-star ratings for the staff's level of experience and training, as well as five-star and three-star ratings for the facility's ability to treat co-occurring disorders. Alum Daniel wrote: "This place literally changed my life. The counselors here were incredibly helpful and provided excellent guidance."

Alum Alison commended the “absolutely awesome” staff and credited the organization for her recovery. Alison, who used the IOP as a step-down option following residential treatment, offered perfect five-star ratings for the amount of family participation and the likelihood they'd recommend the facility to others. Alum Oran added: "Action is a very great place that teaches not just tools for recovery but life tools..."

Secondary sources also revealed positive opinions of the facility, which addressed both the IOP and residential services at Action Drug Rehabs. On its official Facebook page, which the organization can manage, 62 reviewers (alumni, loved ones, staff) offered an average rating of 4.7 out of five stars. [1] Of the total, 89 percent of reviewers gave the facility perfect five-star ratings. Many reviewers characterized the treatment experience in glowing and life-saving terms. In a representative review, Brad wrote: “Absolutely exceptional, life transforming program!”

On Google, four alumni posted reviews of the IOP, all of which were perfect five out of five stars and commended the outstanding counselors. [2] Karlie, a representative reviewer, wrote: “I had an amazing experience with action out patient. It did wonders for my recovery. The staff is extremely supportive and helpful.”


The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date also submitted positive feedback for the facility's IOP. The loved one offered five-star ratings for the facility's counseling options, the amount of family participation, the level of staff training and experience, and for the facility's treatment of co-occurring disorders.


The one staff member who submitted a review to Rehabs.com at the time of this writing also praised the facility. Jessica described the staff as a “big family,” and included her personal story of recovery in her recommendation of the facility: “I know that I would still be clean and sober without Action… If I was no longer an employee, I would continue to recommend friends and family members because they treat you as if you are!”
