  • 12-Step

The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
  • Individual Therapy

This term describes one-on-one therapy, in which a patient and trained counselor, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist meets privately with a patient to discuss challenges related to lifestyle, work, family and romantic relationships that may have contributed to the development of an addiction.

Rehabs 360 Guide

Established in 1991, Singing Trees Recovery Center is located in the midst of the Redwood forest in northern California just south of Garberville. The organization serves adults struggling with substance abuse through several residential treatment programs and on-site detoxification. According to its website, the facility “respects the resident’s right to make his/her own choices and to recover at a pace that is comfortable for them.”

Within the state, Singing Trees Recovery Center is among 15 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that offer residential, non-hospital detoxification, 24.7 percent that provide short-term, residential care, and among 33.6 percent that provide long-term (30+ days) residential care.

Singing Trees Recovery Center offers a range of residential treatment options. These include seven-day detox, as well as residential programs ranging from 14 days to 90 days. Clients may choose to extend the length of their treatment at any time with proper staff notice and approval.

The 30-, 60-, and 90-day treatment programs consist of three phases. During initial phases, clients focus on identifying core issues and developing strategies to address them, as well as working on the first three steps in the 12-step model, participating in educational sessions, and interacting with their counselor on designing a targeted treatment plan with measurable goals.

The 60-day consolidation phase brings together the learnings and concepts conveyed for a deeper dive into understanding and facilitating recovery. Participants develop coping and relapse prevention skills, continue to move through the 12-step model, address achievement of the goals of their treatment plan through a final review, and continue to attend group meetings and sessions.

The 90-day, re-integration phase emphasizes helping clients transition back into the community. Areas of focus include vocational and educational goals planning, applying for part-time work, attending off-site 12-step meetings, finding and interacting with a sponsor, and sharpening relapse prevention strategies and skills. Individual, group, and family counseling remain parts of the regularly scheduled activities during all phases.

Family participation is encouraged throughout treatment. Counseling services for families are available as needed. Clients are encouraged to rebuild family relationships whenever possible. Aftercare is available free of charge for one year to graduates, as are two recovery retreats.

At Singing Trees Recovery Center, the staff includes directors, counselors, case managers, a nutrition educator, night supervisor, and a chef.

Singing Trees Recovery Center offers, as described on its website, a “beautiful and serene recovery environment.” The rehab’s lush forest backdrop provides a rustic setting for the cabin-style houses, where clients reside in shared bedrooms. The main lodge features expansive outdoor seating areas, wood furnishings, and an exercise room with workout equipment and a ping-pong table. Recreational opportunities include swimming in the Eel River, as well as walking and hiking on the grounds and forest.
