Rehabs 360 Guide

Axis Recovery provides highly individualized, upscale residential treatment for adults dealing with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Axis Recovery operates three centers in Southern California: Axis East in Indian Wells, Axis West in Culver City, and Axis Pacific View Recovery Center in Santa Monica. The Axis East facility is considered to be the “most luxurious option” in the Axis Recovery network. Medically-monitored detox is also available on site.

Axis bases its care on behavior modification, positive motivation, and collaboration between the client and his or her treatment team. Treatment combines** evidence-based modalities,12-step principles, and holistic activities**. The length of treatment varies, but most clients stay for at least 90 days. However, the facility offers 30, 60, 90, and 120 day treatment plans based on each client’s needs.

The treatment process begins with an initial phone interview to prequalify clients for the treatment programs. Clients work with admissions specialists to identify their needs and to ensure that clients will have access to the appropriate resources to facilitate their recovery. Clients schedule a time for an admissions meeting at the facility where they are assessed by a team of medical and psychological personnel. This assessment is used to create an individualized treatment plan with specializations for each client’s unique condition and needs. Counselors help design treatment program with specialized tracts that focus on each client’s most pressing concerns to address problem behaviors.

During individual and group therapy, family counseling, and a variety of workshops, clients and staff utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing (MI). Medical care and medication management are provided when needed.

Physical and recreational therapies are also made available as a part of the treatment process, and specific activities are recommended as a part of a tailored treatment plan. These activities include art therapy, yoga, and physical fitness activities. In a holistic approach, the facility also offers nutrition counseling as well as other therapy options including hypnotherapy and acupuncture.

Aftercare services including sober living support and continued care planning are provided during the treatment process. Clients are encouraged to establish support networks including attending meetings in their local communities. The facility can help clients develop their support network by establishing contact with group leaders and help clients find appropriate options for continued car.

Axis Recovery’s treatment teams include physician-led medical assistance teams consisting of at least one qualified physician and certified nursing staff members. The counseling team consists of licensed and certified psychologists, marriage therapists, family therapists, and alcohol and drug counselors. Many of the recovery technicians also have battled addiction, and have extensive experience in assisting clients with addressing their addiction concerns.

Axis East is the most luxurious and longest running of the facilities. Residents live in a spacious, modern house with a limited number of beds, a large backyard, and outdoor pool. Most bedrooms are shared, but a few private suites are available. Additionally, residents benefit from a full-time chef, who ensures everyone can enjoy nutritious, freshly cooked meals.

At the time of this writing, 13 alumni provided feedback for Axis Recovery. The reviews were mostly positive. Ten of the alumni gave the facility five out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness, while two gave four stars and one gave a single star.

Many alumni polled by Rehabs.com described their experiences as “life saving.” Alum J.M.D. wrote: “Axis showed me that I could still have fun in sobriety, and gave me the tools I needed to live a successful life.” Alum Janice agreed: “I am sober today because of them. The facility was great, the counselors were great, the food was ... great. I didn't want to leave, when my time was up, actually.”

Alumni also appreciated the staff, including alum Victoria, who praised the facility for its “love, caring, safe, understanding staff.” Alum Joseph also praised the staff and wanted Rehabs.com to know: "The chef was talented and creative for all food types and allergies and the treatment program was professional and clinical with real tools to use when I got home."

In contrast to the 12 highly favorable reviews, alum Dan offered a one-star rating for treatment effectiveness, meals and nutrition, and accommodations, and wrote: “I felt like this was the worst place on earth.”

On Google, the facility earned nine maximum five-star reviews. [1] Alumni praised the staff, the treatment effectiveness, and the tools clients learned. In a representative review, alum Jeff wrote: “I've now been sober for a year and a half and Axis gave me the foundation I needed. The staff treated me like family and had an honest desire to see me succeed. I still keep in touch with many of the staff, from Brock who answered my first phone call to the director of operations. They have become a huge part of my sobriety.”

To date, Rehabs.com has received feedback from three loved ones about Axis Recovery. Two of the reviews were negative and one review was positive.

The two loved ones gave four out of five star ratings or higher for accommodations, holistic options, and connectivity policies. D.L., the spouse of a former client, wrote that her insurance did not cover treatment even though the facility told her it would.

However, loved one T.M. gave one out of five stars for treatment effectiveness and indicated that they were “extremely disappointed!” The loved one felt duped because the loved one was led to believe that the detox facility was “an upscale, luxurious homelike setting with a beautiful pool and garden where he could recover and feel happy.” After seven days, their son was “transferred to the residential treatment home which was run down, and looked nothing like this facility at all. It is co-ed and the games were all missing parts. The basketball was flat and there was not even a pump to fill it back up.”

At the time of this writing, one staff member provided feedback to Rehabs.com about Axis Recovery. The feedback was average. The anonymous staff member gave treatment effectiveness two out of five stars and indicated that the “atmosphere between staff is aggressive.”

Axis Recovery accepts a wide range of private insurance plans including Humana, Aetna, Anthem, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Self-pay is also accepted. It is unclear if public insurance plans like Medicaid or financial assistance are available.
