    These two terms describe a person who is not only addicted to drugs or alcohol, but also has a mental or emotional illness, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. Facilities that treat patients with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders provide psychiatric treatment in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.

    Dr. Rebecca Shabunov, LPCCProgram Director
    Rebecca Shabunov received her undergraduate degree in Cognitive Psychology (B.A.) from the University of California, Irvine, completed her master’s (M.A.) degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University, and received her doctorate (Psy.D.) in Applied Clinical Psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Rebecca's experience includes working with individuals in residential treatment for drug and alcohol addictions, specializing in dual diagnosis treatment and recovery. Rebecca’s philosophy is one of pragmatism, based on treating each client as an individual with specific needs and empowering clients through education as well as introspection. A firm believer in tailoring treatment to fit each person’s unique needs and interests, Rebecca combines scientific basis with holistic complementary techniques in order to create a comprehensive and specialized treatment plan for each client. Rebecca’s greatest goal is to help others develop into healthy and whole individuals, and to embrace life’s journey. In the therapeutic process, Rebecca empowers the client to discover his or her own resolve, while at the same time directing the client into a safe path of self-discovery. Rebecca helps others to actualize the value of their individual being and inspires them to experience their maximum potential.

    Daniel J. Headrick, MDDetox - Stabilization Director
    Daniel Headrick is the Stabilization Director at Hillside Laguna Beach. He recently served as the Medical Director at Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach, California for 8 years and prior to that was the Medical Director of Hoag Hospital Chemical Dependency Center in Newport Beach, California for 11 years. He dedicates much of his time to the care and treatment of each client of Hillside Laguna Beach. Dr. Headrick oversees the stabilization of each client and makes sure they have a sound transition to treatment and recovery. He cares for clients as they withdraw from alcohol and other substances. Dr. Headrick Received his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles Medical School. (UCLA) A distinguished by his post graduate certification from the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) in 1988. Dr. Headrick is an associate professor at the University of California, Irvine Medical School.

Located in Laguna Beach, Calif., Hillside Laguna is a luxury residential treatment center, and is one of the 490 (37.4 percent) of California treatment facilities that offers residential care. The center caters to clients seeking extreme privacy and who are struggling with substance abuse. It offers a holistic approach to addiction recovery, as well as treatment for co-occurring disorders including depression. Detox is available on-site.


According to Hillside Laguna's website, it approaches recovery through a mixture of 12-step and holistic healing, evidence-based treatment, with heavy emphasis on the individual client.

Holistic treatment incorporates yoga, massages, acupuncture, equine therapy, art therapy, nutritional classes, instructive fitness, meditation, and spiritual counseling. Outdoor activities like hiking, beach outings, and biking around the area are also available.

Programming also includes 12-step meetings. For those seeking an alternative to the 12-step approach, the facility offers other options, including Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) treatment.


Hillside Laguna’s website notes the treatment team includes licensed professional clinical counselors, a designated medical director, and an outreach program director, according to the center’s website. The facility has a designated “holistic program team” that includes a registered dietitian, certified personal trainer, and certified holistic health practitioner.

Hillside Laguna is one of the 182 (13.9 percent) of California treatment facilities that is accredited by The Joint Commission.


This high-end facility’s website notes the center spans three acres of land and accommodates only six clients at a time. Clients may sleep in either private or semi-private bedrooms, and a host of other comforts includes Internet and office access, private video teleconferencing for work calls, a fitness center, on-site laundry facilities, and nutritious meals that the facility's website describes as "organic, gourmet food."

The facility is quite lenient on electronics: clients can spend their free time watching TV or talking on the phone, and post-detox, they can use their cell phones and laptops during non-group hours. Visiting hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays and major holidays, with some restrictions during a client’s first week at the facility.


The two alumni who submitted reviews to Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided positive feedback for Hillside Laguna. They both gave the center five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, meals and nutrition, and accommodations and amenities.

Alum Kellie praised the staff in her review. “The staff were all very nice, approachable, knowledgeable and dedicated,” Kellie wrote. “The staff really did their best to help me.”

“Great People, Beautiful and Tranquil Setting, was provided a unique, effective, and long lasting approach to my addiction,” A.T. wrote.

To date, the one person to leave a review on its Facebook page, which it has the ability to manage, gave five out of five stars, but no commentary. [1]


The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing also gave positive feedback for Hillside Laguna. They both gave five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, accommodations and amenities, and meals and nutrition.

They both thanked the center for helping their sons. "The care and attention he received wad really great," one loved one wrote. "The staff is very accessible and very responsive and have our son’s interest at heart."

"Our family was included in the healing process. I got my son back! The small, personalized experience and caring staff are outstanding," the other loved one added.


The one staff member polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided a positive opinion of Hillside Laguna. They gave the center five out of five stars when asked if they would recommend the facility, and for the leisure and exercise options. They rated the center’s family participation the worst with two stars. They called the staff “great” though they noted that disorganization was a weakness.


According to information submitted to Rehabs.com by Hillside Laguna, treatment is $36,000 a month, and $100,000 for 90 days. However, the center is one of the 734 (56 percent) of California facilities that accepts insurance. Some accepted insurance provides include Aetna, Cigna, United Health Care, Health Net, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Value Options, and GEHA. Clients should call the facility to check their insurance coverage. The facility does not accept Medicare, Medicaid, GHI, or HMOs.
