  • Dual diagnosis treatment for PTSD, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder

  • Medical Detoxification

Drugs and alcohol have widespread effects throughout your body, including but not limited to the addiction and/or physical/psychological dependence that develops with substance abuse over time. Many organ systems are affected by addiction and will react to withdrawal. The term “medical detoxification” means that there is a trained and licensed medical professional onsite to monitor your vital signs and protect your physical and emotional health as your body goes through withdrawal.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

The focus of cognitive behavioral therapy (also called CBT) is helping people to understand the thoughts and emotions that underlie their addiction with the goal of learning new, healthier and more productive ways to understand and express themselves.

Rehabs 360 Guide

Set on 37 acres of rural land in Lake Hughes, 80 miles north of Los Angeles in inland California, Lake Hughes Recovery provides residential treatment for adult men struggling with substance use disorder or a dual diagnosis. The center is one of the 52.3 percent of rehabs in California that offer dedicated services for men. Non-medical detox services are available on-site.

Upon admission, all clients participate in an extensive intake interview and receive a full medical assessment to ensure that non-medical detox is safe. During non-medical detox, residents are monitored and staff work to keep them comfortable, but medications are not used.

The length of stay at Lake Hughes varies according to the individual client's needs, but most men stay for 30 days or longer — positioning the center among the 33.6 percent of California-based facilities that offer residential treatment lasting longer than 30 days.

Treatment at Lake Hughes Recovery is individualized and 12-step based, and uses evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Therapy takes place in individual, group, and family therapy sessions, and clients also receive training on how to avoid relapse, manage stress, and ensure they're getting proper nutrition.

Experiential activities are incorporated into treatment and include yoga, farming, meditation, and fitness plans, as well as art therapy and equine therapy. A dual diagnosis track helps clients develop coping skills for co-occurring disorders such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Lake Hughes's website also notes that the center offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP), a treatment type offered at 39.4 percent of California rehabs and aftercare, but doesn't provide details of these programs.

The team includes board-certified counselors, some of whom are in recovery themselves, and Lake Hughes is among the 182 (13.9 percent) of California treatment facilities accredited by The Joint Commission.

Set on an organic peach and pomegranate orchard, Lake Hughes Recovery offers clients a serene and scenic environment for recovery. Amenities include a gym, a sauna, and an on-site hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber. Meals are prepared by a professional chef, and the center is pet-friendly, should any guests wish to bring their pet to treatment with them.

Most the six alumni polled by Rehabs.com gave very positive feedback, repeatedly praising the center's staff as well as its "beautiful" and "serene" environment. "This place has saved my life in more ways than I can count," alum Adam wrote in a particularly effusive review.

However, an alum going by J.T. wrote that while the facility was indeed beautiful and serene, they had trouble with the non-medical nature of the center's detox services, and felt that the facility was understaffed.
