  • Eating Disorder Treatment

Many mental health professionals view eating disorders (including anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder, along with other dysfunctional eating patterns) as a food addiction – in that food is used in ways other than as fuel or a source of pleasure. Some, but not all, addiction treatment programs include eating disorder treatment as part of the service menu. Also, an eating disorder may be a dual-diagnosis or a co-occurring disorder with drug or alcohol addiction.
  • Creative Arts Therapy

Writing, making art or engaging in theater can be deeply therapeutic for people working to recover from addiction. Many facilities offer one or several forms of creative arts therapy as a way to help patients learn to express their feelings in productive ways.

Rehabs 360 Guide

Paradigm Malibu is located in Malibu, Calif., between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. This luxury treatment facility provides residential programming for teenagers who are struggling with substance abuse, process addictions, mental health concerns, and co-occurring disorders.

Although Paradigm Malibu treats both male and female clients, many therapy sessions are offered on a gender-specific basis. Although duration varies, most clients remain in treatment for 30 to 45 days. Those who complete the program are eligible for free aftercare.

Within the state, Paradigm Mailbu is among 33.6 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that provide long-term (30+ days) of residential, non-hospital care, 54.9 percent with programs for clients with co-occurring disorders, and among 21.3 percent with special programs for adolescents.

At Paradigm Malibu, clients undergo a comprehensive medical, psychological, biopsychosocial, nutritional, and educational assessment upon admission. The clinical team uses the results to develop a customized care plan for each client.

Based on a holistic approach, most plans encompass a mix of daily individual therapy sessions and additional group and family therapy, as well experiential and recreational treatment modalities, including expressive arts therapy, drama therapy, equine therapy, and narrative therapy. If deemed appropriate, clients may also be introduced to the 12-Steps.

The center encourages participation in a range of physical activities, such as hiking, surfing, yoga, and gym workouts. Additionally, Paradigm Malibu offers educational programming and an on-site teacher coordinates with clients’ schools to minimize disruptions in their education. Tutors from UCLA and Pepperdine University are also available to assist clients.

Within the state, Paradigm Malibu is among 13.9 percent substance abuse treatment facilities accredited by the Joint Commission. Paradigm Malibu offers a staff-to-client ratio that falls between 1:1 and 1:3. The center’s treatment team includes physicians, psychiatrists, master’s-level therapists, teachers, a nurse, a recovery specialist, other specialized therapists, and wellness professionals.

Paradigm Malibu strives to provide comfortable accommodations along with plenty of on-site amenities. Many bedrooms come with private patios and ocean views and, although private bedrooms are available, the center encourages residents to enjoy the peer-to-peer support that comes with shared living quarters.

Residents are expected to keep their rooms clean, but the program does not require clients to complete chores or on-site work. A housekeeping staff attends to facility cleanliness and upkeep. In addition, a team of on-site chefs prepares meals daily that can accommodate a variety of diets, including vegetarian, vegan, and kosher.

Each of Paradigm Malibu's four residential facilities offers unique features and amenities, including swimming pools, tennis courts, and beach access. All residents may take advantage of holistic health treatments, including massage and acupuncture.

At the time of this writing, three alumni submitted mixed views about Paradigm Malibu: one moderately positive and two negative. One former client praised the staff as “beyond exceptional” as well as the food, the physical facility and surroundings, and the hikes and beach, which “were my personal favorite activities.”

However, this alum did not receive the help needed to resolve their issues and wrote: “While I absolutely loved Paradigm and met some of the most genuinely kind people there I've ever met, the amount/level of treatment personally wasn't enough for me.”

The other reviewers citing a misdiagnosis, lack of transitional life skills, and long-term results as facility weakness. One client wrote: “I have friends who are struggling with their addictions and mental health issues that were made worse by their stay at Paradigm.” However, the other alum added: “Not everything was bad- food was great, experienced were amazing, the amount of care and love from everyone is incredible. all of my therapists were incredible and i will forever be grateful to have met everyone i did there.”

On secondary sites, Paradigm Malibu received extremely favorable coverage to date: 4.8 out of five stars based on 45 reviews on Google, four stars based on 12 reviews on Yelp, and 4.9 stars based on 108 reviews on Facebook, which the organization may manage. [1] [2] [3]

Reviewers (alumni, loved ones, staff, others) generally raved about the care received, results achieved, the committed and compassionate staff, and recommended the facility. In a representative review, five-star reviewer Katrine on Google wrote: “This place literally saved my life. The staff is incredibly dedicated and loving. They were extremely supportive and welcoming of me. Thank you so much for all you have done for me.”

Three loved ones submitted mostly positive impressions about Paradigm Malibu to Rehabs.com to date: two highly favorable reviews, one mixed. Two loved ones praised the extremely helpful and kind staff, “fantastic” and varied therapies, physical surroundings, meals. “The staff were very knowledgeable and were able to ‘break through’ barriers that our family thought would never come down," one loved one wrote.

The other loved ones highlighted the care and consideration given to families, including insurance assistance and communication updates, noting to Rehabs.com: “We were able to sit-in on the therapy sessions via phone call, and were given updates and made aware of our daughter's experience and the progress she'd been making.” However, the third loved one wrote: “I sure had a lot of faith in them, but it didn't work out for us. Good luck!”

At the time of this writing, Paradigm Malibu accepts payments from most insurance companies and offers pre-certification prior to admission. Additionally, the center offers several options for financing treatment.
