  • 12-Step

The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
  • Holistic Therapy

Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.

Set in Southern California's Orange County, Playa House provides gender-specific sober living homes for adults recovering from substance use disorder. Playa House is a private for-profit company, which make up 34 percent of all substance abuse treatment facilities in the state.

Playa House provides its residents with a safe and structured living environment, complete with weekly in-house meetings, regular drug and alcohol screenings, and daily check-ins. In addition, clients are required to complete household chores, adhere to wake-up times and curfews, and attend 12-step meetings.

The program also provides employment assistance, and testimonials posted on the facility's website indicate that residents can get jobs during their stay. Playa House will also help residents find placement in an outpatient treatment program, if needed. In California, the house is among the 46.1 percent of facilities to provide some form of employment counseling or training for clients.

All sober living homes provide 24-hour staff support and have live-in house managers. The one staff member surveyed by Rehab.com to date noted that most house managers are certified alcohol and drug counselors.
