The merger of Hazelden and the Betty Ford Center brought together 15 residential and outpatient facilities under two of the most iconic names in addiction treatment. One of the best-known rehabs in the world, the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., offers medical detox plus residential and outpatient treatment for adults seeking treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The treatment process begins with a comprehensive assessment to guide the development of treatment programs. Hazelden Betty Ford’s programs use the 12-step model alongside evidence-based treatment modalities, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and motivational interviewing (MI). Clients also receive life skills training and alternative therapies such as meditation and yoga. Family members ages 13 and up may attend a three-day family program.
Offerings at this center are varied and personalized to the clients’ needs. With regard to residential programs, there is a 45-day residential pain management course. There is also residential or day treatment for young adults ages 18 to 25, making it one of the 436 (33.3 percent) facilities in California that offer treatments specifically for young adults. There is a structured sober living program with a 90-day minimum commitment. Outpatient options include an intensive outpatient program (IOP), a four-day program for the children of alcoholics (ages 7 to 12).
Specialized treatment areas include programs for opioid addiction, pain management, older adults, healthcare professionals, and other professionals. It is one of the 355 (27.1 percent) of California treatment facilities that provide specialized services for LGBT clients.
Prevention is a big part of the program, and there are community-focused programs to education and offer prevention services in the community.
An aftercare group meets once a week. Other aftercare provisions include social networks and apps, family guidance and support, telephone or online recovery coaching, and monitoring and accountability.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
The treatment team includes three physicians and two psychiatrists, plus a nurse and certified therapists and counselors. It is one of California’s 182 (13.9 percent) facilities that are accredited by the Joint Commission.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Betty Ford Center at Rancho Mirage has a gym, a pool with hot tub, and a lake on-site. Clients live with roommates in gender-specific residence halls and are assigned daily chores. Reviewers polled by Rehabs.com went out of their way to say how clean the facility was.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY

In their comments, reviewers frequently provided positive feedback about the privacy, the amenities, and the quality of the counseling. They also described the program as very thorough, indicating that it got to the root of their problems.
