ABOUT THE DISCOVERY HOUSE
Located in a quiet commercial neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, northwest of Los Angeles, the Discovery House provides residential and outpatient treatment to adults struggling with substance use disorder. The facility also provides medical detox, which is available in just 15 percent of non-hospital treatment facilities in California.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Residential treatment typically lasts 30 days and combines 12-step principles with evidenced-based modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), the latter of which is offered by 38.3 percent of California treatment facilities.
Clients attend individual and group therapy, as well as family counseling and multi-family education groups. There are also programs for clients with co-occurring disorders, a specialty available in 54.9 percent of treatment facilities in California. Dual diagnosis programming may include psychiatric assessment and ongoing medication management.
The program is rounded-out by a range of holistic offerings such as yoga, music therapy, psychodrama, mindfulness, and neurofeedback. The center also offers personalized outpatient care, at intensities ranging from weekly to daily care. Each client leaves with a tailored aftercare plan, plus access to monthly alumni meetings.

The center’s clinicians are primarily certified addiction counselors, one of them education to master’s level. To date, the 10 individuals polled about the facility's staff gave the metric high ratings.

They reported that staff were helpful and compassionate, and that treatment was effective and adequately individualized. "Great experience. They have one counselor for every 3 clients. WHAT STAFF SAY
At the time of this writing, the two staff membered surveyed by Rehabs.com gave the Discover House negative feedback. Both complained about poor management practices, as well as a lack of flexibility when it came to treatment approach. "Management is dysfunctional...clients are only directed to the 12 Step-based, disease-model perspective of treatment," John wrote in a representative review.
FINANCING
According to its website, the Discovery House accepts most PPO insurances, including Aetna, Cigna, Humana, and United, with the usual caveat that insurance companies will often not pay for the full cost of treatment.
