Group therapy is a vital component of addiction recovery treatment, considered as important and effective (sometimes even more so) than individual therapy. Benefits include reducing isolation and loneliness and providing the opportunity to learn from others in recovery. In the addiction setting, group therapy is run by trained professionals who guide participants toward a shared goal of recovery.
  • Residential Treatment

Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.

Rehabs 360 Guide

Located in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., Sheer Recovery is a luxury treatment center that offers a range of services to individuals struggling with addiction, mental health disorders, or co-occurring disorders. It offers detox, outpatient programs, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient treatment, and residential treatment, which about 38 percent of all treatment facilities in California offer.

According to Sheer Recovery's website, it utilizes pharmacogenomics, which is a field of medicine that screens an individual's DNA to determine what drug and dosing is appropriate. With this testing, each client receives an individualized treatment program and report with their genetic test results.

The first phase of treatment is detox and residential stabilization, and treatment begins with a toxicology report. Following the report, the treatment team works with clients to create a customized detox plan that usually ranges between five to 10 days. This phase addresses both the physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms. Once clients are finished with detox, they work with case managers and start group works. The detox and residential process is between seven and 30 days.

Phase two is partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) care. During this phase, clients attend outside 12-step meetings, and programming may include life skills such as resume building and aftercare planning. Clients also visit with family and sponsors in this phase, which is typically 30 to 90 days long.

The last phase, Phase Three, is outpatient programs. This is only recommended once clients finish at least 90 days of treatment. In outpatient treatment, individuals create discharge plans and return to work, schools, family, and other responsibilities. This phase is typically 90 to 180 days.
