  • 12-Step

The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
  • Residential Treatment

Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.

Rehabs 360 Guide

Founded in 1997, Action Drug Rehabs provides residential and outpatient treatment for drug and alcohol addiction at various locations throughout Southern California. The Ranch, located in the Santa Clarita Hills, is a residential sober living treatment center for adolescents ages 12 to 17. It is one of the 279 (21.3 percent) of California facilities that offer treatment options specifically for adolescents. Detoxification services are not available on-site, but the center is equipped to treat co-occurring disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Potential clients of Action Drug Rehabs begin with either a phone or in-person interview to determine the best treatment track. The on-site admissions process that follows includes an assessment conducted by treatment team members and attendance at a welcome group meeting. A typical residential stay is between 30 and 90 days, making Action Drug Rehabs one of California’s 440 (33.6 percent) of long-term treatment facilities.

Treatment at The Ranch is centered around the 12-Step model, with clients attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings in the local community seven days per week. Most therapy is based in group sessions, although individual counseling is available. Consulting doctors prescribe medication as needed.

Another key aspect of treatment is family involvement. Residents participate in weekly family sessions and multi-family therapy groups, and family members receive education to facilitate positive communication. During treatment clients are expected to find employment, making it one of the 604 (46.1 percent) of California programs that provide vocational help.

Clients can keep up with schooling through the on-site classroom.

The adolescent residential treatment program manager holds a master's in marriage and family therapy and supervises a team of certified drug and alcohol counselors. The facility prioritizes diversity and multicultural sensitivity. Consulting treatment professionals include board-certified addictionologists and psychiatrists, and the agency's founder has more than 30 years in recovery. It is one of 182 (13.9 percent) of California's Joint Commission accredited facilities.

The Ranch sits on a 20-acre campus featuring multiple residential buildings with shared bedrooms, gender-separate bathrooms, and a swimming pool. It features plenty of natural light throughout living and meeting spaces.

Residents participate in daily hiking activities in the remote facility's surrounding hills and have access to a local gym and an on-site garden. There are also regular trips into Santa Clarita or to a nearby beach for off-campus re-socialization activities.

Clients are given frequent opportunities to make and receive supervised phone calls.
