  • Family Program

Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.
  • Eating Disorder Treatment

Many mental health professionals view eating disorders (including anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder, along with other dysfunctional eating patterns) as a food addiction – in that food is used in ways other than as fuel or a source of pleasure. Some, but not all, addiction treatment programs include eating disorder treatment as part of the service menu. Also, an eating disorder may be a dual-diagnosis or a co-occurring disorder with drug or alcohol addiction.

Rehabs 360 Guide

Adolescent Growth, located in Sherman Oaks, Calif., offers comprehensive residential and outpatient treatment to adolescents ages 12-17 years old seeking treatment for mental health, eating disorders, and co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders. It is one of the 279 (21.3 percent) of treatment facilities that provide services for adolescents. Detox is not available.

The treatment process begins with a phone call to the admissions department at the facility. A pre-assessment will be completed to ensure the client is a good fit for the program. Once the client is deemed to be a good fit, the parent will complete consent forms that must be signed prior to admission. Most clients remain in residential treatment for an average of 60 to 90 days, making it one of California’s 440 (33.6 percent) of long-term treatment facilities.

The facility’s treatment program follows evidence-based treatment approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which is only used in 660 (50.3 percent) of treatment facilities in the state. Throughout residential treatment, clients receive talk therapy, family therapy, psychiatric care, proper nutrition, academic instruction, physical fitness, group therapy and more. Clients receive individual therapy sessions up to four times per week and group programming on a daily basis.

This facility offers unique treatments and therapies, including yoga and meditation, and they also attend weekly church services. Families are considered to be an integral part of the treatment program and are included in weekly and bi-weekly family therapy groups, parenting support groups, multi family groups and parent restoration weekend workshops on Saturdays.

The facility’s partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a structured and intensive treatment option where clients participate in treatment activities eight hours per day, five days per week and return home in the evenings and for the weekend. PHP follows similar treatment methods to the residential program and is often a good step-down option following a client’s completion of residential treatment. PHP is available for clients with any of the disorders that the facility treats.

Intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) is also a structured but short term program for clients who are able to function at home and in the community but require treatment more intense than weekly therapy. Clients in this program participate in programming for three hours per day, three days per week. They receive individual, group, and family therapy.

The treatment team includes a psychiatrist, a program manager, and an assistant program manager in addition to other treatment staff whose credentials are not listed on the facility’s website. The staff to client ratio is kept at a minimum of 3:1 at all times. It is one of the 182 (13.9 percent) facilities that are certified by the Joint Commission.

The Sherman Oaks facility is located in an upscale neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley. Residents will share bedrooms. There is a full kitchen and cozy communal living room. Daily off-site opportunities include gym visits, and adolescents can earn off-site visits with family.
