New Prospects is an intensive residential rehabilitation program that aims to help people with substance abuse and co-occurring mental illness build better lives. Currently, John serves on the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) Steering Committee of the Clinical Trials Network, and Chair of the Community Treatment Provider (CTP)Policy Committee. John also serves as Chairman of the Advisory Board and is on the Executive Board for the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), Vice President of the Board of Directors for Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) and the Regional Youth Adult Social Action Partnership (RYASAP), Chair for the CTP of Fairfield County, and is actively involved in community prevention councils in Fairfield County. Previously John served as Chair of the Dissemination Committee for the NIDA Clinical Trials Network, Past President of the Southwest Connecticut Mental Health Systems Board, Chair of the Ethics Committee for the Connecticut Certification Board (SWCMHS), and President of the New England Association of Drug Court Professionals. Some of the highlights of her accomplishments are: coordinated renovations at the shelter's third and fourth floors; monitored compliance to fire and building codes; successfully secured funds via State Bond Commission; designed and edited organization's annual reports; prepared policy and procedure manual; secured additional funding for renovations through applications for grant-in-aid; revised the organization's brochures; implemented first multi-user/multi-tasking computer system; planned/implemented automated medication dispensing system; supervised/prepared descriptive and trend reports in an automated environment. Dorna is a member of DMHAS Multicultural Advisory Council and the Co-Chair of Region I, Multicultural Council.

ABOUT NEW PROSPECTS

Located in Bridgeport, Conn., New Prospects offers an intensive residential rehabilitation program for adult men and women seeking treatment for alcohol and substance abuse. This facility is part of the Recovery Network of Programs, a private, nonprofit, social service agency that has been serving the Bridgeport community since 1972. New Prospects treats substance abuse, co-occurring disorders, and trauma-related conditions. Detox is not available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The hospital-level program at New Prospects caters to clients who require 24-hour medically directed evaluation, care, and treatment. Priority access is provided for pregnant and postpartum women and those with infectious diseases.

Programming is gender-specific. New Prospects is one of the 8 (3.8 percent) hospital-level treatment facilities in the state. Although detoxification is not available on-site, the Recovery Network of Programs does offer medically monitored residential detoxification at their First Step program, which is also located in Bridgeport.

New Prospects an interdisciplinary team approach combined with a client-directed approach.** Programming begins with a screening, comprehensive assessment, and on-site psychiatric evaluation. Only 150 (71.4 percent) of the substance abuse treatment facilities in the state offer comprehensive mental health assessments too. HIV/AIDS testing is also available if needed. There are only 69 (32.9 percent) facilities in Connecticut that offer HIV testing and screening services.

Individual, group, and couples/family counseling forms the basis of treatment, along with educational programming comprised of lectures, videos, and speakers that address integrated care for substance abuse and mental health issues. The typical length of stay is approximately 30 days.

Evidence-based treatments known to be effective for co-occurring integrated care are also key in the residential program at New Prospects. These include motivational interviewing (MI), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), psychopharmacological interventions, pharmacotherapy, and trauma-informed services.

For clients that need assistance getting through treatment, medication-assisted treatment support with methadone or Suboxone is also available. Methadone is used in 33 (15.7 percent) of facilities in Connecticut. Clients can also take advantage of smoking cessation services.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at New Prospects consists of counselors, clinical supervisors, nurses, consulting psychiatrists, a medical director, and support staff. All clinical staff members are credentialed in the treatment of co-occurring psychiatric disorders. New Prospects is one of Connecticut’s 60 (28.6 percent) of CARF-accredited facilities.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

New Prospects is located in a residential area of Bridgeport. It is located in a large, renovated brick building. Clients stay in gender-specific housing and have access to medical and counseling personnel at all times.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has received six alumni reviews for New Prospects. Five of the reviews are very positive, while one is negative.

The positive reviews provided praise on the treatment program and its effectiveness. Alum Cynthia wrote representatively: "This was the best 30-day program I have ever been to. I recommend it to everyone."

Alumni did not agree on cleanliness, however. Alum Thomas wrote: "New Prospects offers clean private rooms w/your own bath," but M.L. wrote that the facility was "A completely unsafe environment for women."

On Google, New Prospects had an average rating of 4.3 out of five stars from seven reviews to date. [1] Five of the seven reviews were five out of five stars. In the only negative review, F.G. wrote how it was “understaffed, elementary and unsafe.” However, other reviews give positive feedback to specific staff members, described as “knowledgeable and helpful.”

FINANCING

CONCLUSION

In 2014, NBC Connecticut reported that New Prospects had a janitor accused of sexually assaulting three women at the facility. The allegations were reported to police by staff. The janitor was arrested.
