The first Narconon was started and founded by William Benitez, an inmate at Arizona State Prison. Mr. Benitez was a heroin addict who could not seem to get off of drugs using traditional forms of treatment. After being sentenced to prison he had a realization that drug addiction had caused most of the problems in his life, including the current one. He set out to change himself through self-improvement.

Rehabs 360 Guide

For almost 50 years, Narconon, a global organization, has been addressing addiction using an evidence-based, drug-free, secular approach developed by L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. Located in Clearwater, Fla., Narconon Suncoast treats adults struggling with substance abuse.

The facility’s residential program typically lasts between two and three months and includes a non-medical detox period. According to the center’s website, the program represents an alternative to 12-step methodology. Within the state, Narconon Suncoast is among 20.8 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that provide long-term, residential care, and among 10.9 percent that offer residential, non-hospital detoxification.

At Narconon Suncoast, clients begin their stay with the center’s signature “New Life Detoxification,” a non-medical process that uses vitamins, exercise, and sessions in the sauna. This regimen is believed to remove the “residue” of drugs and alcohol through sweat, thereby ending cravings. One of Narconon Suncoast’s “withdrawal specialists” also helps each client with a specialized nutrition plan.

After clients completely detox, they are guided to turn their attention from the past to the present by setting objectives. Residents focus on developing life skills, including overcoming life’s ups and downs, assembling a personal value system, and repairing relationships. Each of these lessons is taught through practical coursework.

Within the state of Florida, Narconon Suncoast is among 30.4 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities accredited by The Joint Commission. The staff comprises a medical and nursing team, state-certified addiction professionals, holistic practitioners, certified nursing assistants, and others, including “Shooter,” a specially trained drug detection dog. To date, the seven individuals polled on the matter by Rehabs.com gave mixed opinions concerning the staff.
