  • 12-Step

The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
  • Residential Treatment

Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.

Rehabs 360 Guide

Outback Serenity Center, located in Hazlehurst, in southeast Georgia, offers residential, faith-based treatment for adult men struggling with substance abuse. According to its website, the mission of the facility is for clients to “learn a new concept and design for living based on the truths and principles of God’s Word as taught from a recovery perspective.” Within the state, Outback Serenity Center is among 17.2 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that offer long-term, residential non-hospital care.

According to the facility’s website, clients are required to commit to a minimum of six months for the Outback Serenity Center recovery program. Residents follow a Christ-centered, 12-step curriculum that draws on personal examination and the application of biblical principles.

"Step-work" is supplemented by daily group counseling and weekly individual counseling, plus devotions, Bible study, and therapeutic recreation. The treatment team considers addiction a symptom of deeper issues that may need to be addressed in a person’s life, and that addiction may cause an individual to deem themselves unworthy of love or unable to accept the love of God. Treatment aims to address those feelings.

The facility does not publish specifics of its staff’s credentials. However, according to a video on the website, the director and property manager established the facility because he had struggled with substance abuse and wanted to provide those in this situation with a safe and healing haven.

Bedrooms are spacious and shared. Family wellness and communication is encouraged and facilitated by events such as holiday celebrations.
