  • Family Program

Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.
  • Residential Treatment

Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.

Rehabs 360 Guide

Set in the southeastern reach of Oahu, in a lush setting with views of distant volcanoes, Hina Mauka is a private nonprofit that offers evidence-based residential and outpatient treatment for adults struggling with substance use disorder or a dual diagnosis. The facility also offers school-based programming for teens (one of 119 programs for teens in the State of Hawaii). There's also dedicated programming for incarcerated women and the homeless.

Medical detox is not available on-site, though medication-assisted therapy (MAT) is available. According to the facility's website, a waitlist is typical for residential treatment but not for outpatient care.

Clients need to be medically stable and, if necessary, have undergone detoxification prior to beginning treatment. Upon enrollment, each individual receives a personalized treatment plan and begins working with a case manager.

Residential treatment is offered in three tracks: substance abuse, dual diagnosis, and those involved in the criminal justice system. On all treatment tracks, residents receive at least 24 hours per week of face-to-face services, including individual and group counseling utilizing evidence-based strategies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational enhancement (ME).

Residents are also encouraged to participate in self-help sessions, such as 12-step fellowships, and receive education about substance use, life skills training, and preventing relapse. Staff also help clients to address any employment, legal, and housing challenges.

Hina Mauka also offers day treatment, which provides full-day programming in the same three track, as well as flexible outpatient and intensive outpatient program (IOP) offerings, in which clients can attend between one and 15 hours of treatment per week, depending on their needs.

Aftercare consists of weekly group meetings for up to 12 weeks after completing residential or outpatient care. There's also an optional peer mentoring scheme to help graduates transition back into community life.

According to the facility’s website, the treatment team includes a board-certified psychiatrist, master's- and Ph.D-level therapists, nurses, and certified substance abuse counselors. Out of five stars, the two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff's level of training and experience gave this aspect of treatment a three-star and a four-star rating.

The residential center has 48 beds and provides nutritious meals and transportation. The facility's website notes that recreational and leisure activities are scheduled, but does not specify details.

Of the six alumni reviews received by Rehabs.com to date, four are positive and two negative. Multiple former clients represented the program as providing insight into their lives and recovery process. "Going to gina Mauka was the best thing I could have done. It helped me learn about myself and gave me insight to the greater things in life," Chantel wrote in a representative review.

The two alumni who were polled on the center's performance in 15 treatment metrics gave three- and four-star ratings for the overall effectiveness of treatment, the amount of family involvement, counseling options, and the center's capabilities in providing dual diagnosis treatment. All six alumni gave mostly positive feedback on the center's accommodations and amenities.

The two negative reviewers variously complained of disruptive fellow clients and a feeling that staff took advantage of clients.

Hina Mauka also has mostly positive feedback on secondary sites, with average ratings of 4.7 stars based on 66 reviews on Facebook (where the facility can manage its own page) and 3.5 stars based on four reviews on Yelp, plus two four-star ratings and a five-star rating on Google.[1] [2] [3] The reviewers repeatedly thanked Hina Mauka for their successful sobriety: "I am truly grateful completing treatment and changing my life around for the good, I love myself and my life that I live today....thank you Hina Mauka!!!" Rick wrote in a representative review on Facebook.

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date, B.V.M., gave very positive feedback, writing: "After being in multipl rehabs this one worked," giving the center five stars for its family involvement and, the amount of staff support.

Hina Mauka also has mostly positive feedback from staff, with a four-star average rating based on five reviews on Indeed, plus a single two-star rating on Glassdoor.[4] [5] The two negative reviews variously cited disorganization and unspecified organizational problems, but they were outnumbered by the positive reviewers, who described a healthy work environment that's dedicated to its target communities. "Positive work environment with nurturing supervision... Hina Mauka is a non profit that is dedicated to serving those with addiction issues in Hawaii," one anonymous reviewer wrote in a typical comment on Indeed.

The facility does not publish its fees online, though the cost of treatment is subsidized by donations. The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's affordability gave it cost a three-star and a four-star rating.
