ABOUT CHESTNUT HEALTH SYSTEMS IN BELLEVILLE, IL
Chestnut Health Systems, located in Belleville, Ill., offers outpatient and intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment to adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse. Chestnut Health Systems has been operating for over 40 years and operates four separate treatment facilities. The network also includes a research institute, credit counseling services, and employment assistance programs. Inpatient treatment and medical detoxification are offered at other locations in the Chestnut Health Systems network.
The Belleville location does not offer detoxification, but does use Suboxone in conjunction with its other treatment programs. The facility has been awarded The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The Chestnut Health Services website says the facility utilizes “research based counseling and treatment methods.” To be admitted, clients must first complete an assessment at the facility. The assessment includes an individual diagnostic test, a consultation with a counselor, a urine drug screening, review of previous treatment records, and a physical screening.
The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Chestnut Health Services, one of 416 in Illinois, involves nine or more hours of counseling per week on weekdays or evenings. Throughout IOP treatment, clients receive individual and group counseling as well as substance abuse education and life skills training. The Outpatient Treatment Program at Chestnut Health Services is recommended for clients who have completed inpatient or IOP programs, and involves eight hours of counseling each week. Medication Assisted Treatment using Suboxone is also available. Chestnut Belleville is part of the 20.2 percent of facilities in Illinois to offer Suboxone treatment. Participants are encouraged to participate in various self helps groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Celebrate Recovery.
The Adolescent Addiction Treatment program offers individualized treatment plans to children ages 13-18. Only 26.5 percent of Illinois facilities offer programs specifically tailored to adolescents. The program uses 12 step methods, recreational activities, and family programming. Chestnut Health Systems encourages families to participate in their loved one’s treatment experience regardless of which program the family member is completing.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
The treatment team at Chestnut Health Systems consists of doctors, psychiatrists, nurses, licensed primary counselors, residential counselors, recreation coordinators and case managers.
REVIEWS
At the time of this writing only a single individual has responded to the Rehabs.com survey. The anonymous loved one said he would not recommend Chestnut Health Systems to others. He gave the facility four out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, three stars for accommodations & amenities, and three stars for meals & nutrition. He agreed that there are many counseling options to choose from, agreed that the facility is adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems, but disagreed when asked if the facility staff are experienced and well-trained. He felt that a strength of the facility was “It is close for the community.” When asked about weaknesses of Chestnut Belleville, he said “They kind of just push meds.”
Opinions on third party sites are mixed. On the facility’s Google page, there is an overall rating of 3.2 out of five stars based on 110 total reviews.[1] Five reviewers gave five stars, and four reviewers gave one star. S.R., the parent of a client, who gave one star, said that the facility is dirty and “no one knows what’s going on.” She wrote, “I can't even begin to start with all the failings going on here.” T.R., an alum, did not agree with that viewpoint. She gave five stars and wrote, "I am glad that there are ppl who bring family back together after a horrific event."
FINANCING
There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its costs. However, according to the facility website, Chestnut Health Services accepts medical insurance, Illinois Medicaid and direct client payment by cash, check or credit card. Chestnut accepts insurance from Aetna, Aetna Better Health, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, and more. The facility website states that employees can also help with loans and state-funded financial assistance.
