Family Program
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.12-Step
The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.

Carey SnowExecutive DirectorCarey Snow is the Executive Director of the Jackson Recovery Centers, Inc. Foundation and the Vice President of Resource Development at Jackson Recovery Centers, Inc. Carey has over 20 years of expertise in non-profit executive leadership, fund development and operations management. She has comprehensive training in conflict resolution. Carey received her education from Mary Mount California University and California State University at Sacramento. Carey has also completed extensive studies in mediation at the National Conflict Resolution Center, San Diego.- David Paulsrud, M.D.Medical DirectorDavid Paulsrud, M.D., is the Medical Director at Jackson Recovery Centers. He has over 50 years of medical experience, and has been with Jackson Recovery Centers for almost 20 years. Prior to his work at Jackson Recovery, Dr. Paulsrud served as an orthopaedic surgeon in Sioux City, and served as a doctor in the Army for 11 years, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Dr. Paulsrud has been honored with several local honors including, Sertoma Service of Mankind Award, AID Center Distinguished Community Leadership Award, and Morningside College Honorary Doctorate in Community Service. He also served on the Sioux City City Council from 1987-1992. Dr. Paulsrud received his medical degree from the University of Iowa.

ABOUT JACKSON RECOVERY CENTERS – SYNERGY CENTER
Jackson Recovery Centers is an Iowa-based behavioral health treatment provider that offers a variety of addiction and mental health treatment services. The Synergy Center, located in Cherokee, offers residential and outpatient treatment for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. A detox and stabilization period is included as part of the center’s inpatient program.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Before intake, all clients undergo a comprehensive assessment with a clinician to determine the most appropriate course of treatment. Those with severe conditions may be referred to Synergy Center’s inpatient program, which includes a 72-hour medical detoxification and stabilization period.
The center’s inpatient program is trauma-informed and based on 12-step principles. Each client receives a highly individualized care plan that incorporates medical services, psychiatric evaluations and treatment, individual and group counseling, medication management, and family programming. The facility strives to create a welcoming environment by incorporating a variety of recreational, social, and exercise activities.
Synergy Center’s outpatient programming utilizes similar therapeutic modalities but offers more flexibility and may be used as a step-down from residential treatment. Outpatient treatment also addresses relapse prevention and provides continuing care for those who complete the program.

The Synergy Center staff includes physicians, nurses, and licensed therapists.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Synergy Center’s residential clients sleep in dormitory-style rooms and receive treatment in simply furnished group rooms and offices. Residents eat meals in the cafeteria, although coffee, juice, and snacks are always available in the patient lounge. Physical activity is included as part of the center’s residential program.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
The only alum surveyed by Rehabs.com at time of writing gave a mixed but generally negative review of the facility. The alum gave the facility low one out of five star ratings in most metrics, including exercise and leisure, family participation, and holistic offerings. However, the alum did give the facility's treatment effectiveness a perfect five-star rating, and the facility's affordability and the staff's level of training and experience four-star ratings. In their commentary, the alum's disagreements with the facility were focused on their lack of experience when treating mental health disorders: "They have no clue how to help people with mental health problems."
On Google, two users who rated their experiences at Synergy Center provided four- and five-star ratings, based on a scale of one to five stars.[1] Clark, who submitted the five-star review, characterized the facility’s staff as polite and understanding. “I HAD A CHANCE TO REWALLY LOOK AT MY LIFE AND A CHANCE TO LIVE A GOOD CLEAN LIFE AGAIN… I CAN MANAGE AND CON TROL MY LIFE IN A PRODUCTIVE MANNER , I REALLY LEARNED TO HAVE SOME SELF RESPECTAND RESPECT THE LIVES OF OTHERS,” he wrote.

According to the center’s website, Jackson Recovery Centers accepts most commercial insurance plans, and accepts Iowa and Nebraska Medicaid. Sliding scale fees are based on household income.
