  • 12-Step

The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
  • SMART Recovery

SMART Recovery’s 4-Point Program® helps people recover from all types of addictive behaviors, including: alcoholism, drug abuse, substance abuse, drug addiction, alcohol abuse, gambling addiction, cocaine addiction, and addiction to other substances and activities. SMART Recovery teaches self-empowerment and self-reliance, encourages individuals to recover and live satisfying lives, and teaches tools and techniques for self-directed change. Its meetings are educational and include open discussions. SMART Recovery advocates the appropriate use of prescribed medications and psychological treatments and evolves as scientific knowledge of addiction recovery evolves.

Maria started out early in her career as an Intensive Supervision Officer for adults in Johnson, Wyandotte and Sedgwick Counties. Shortly after graduation she went to work at Hutchinson Maximum Correctional Facility to do therapy with Sexual Offenders. Once again alcohol and drug addiction played a major role in these offenders acting out behaviors. As a result she tested out for her licensed clinical addiction counselor license and began to work in the addiction field. Maria went to work originally in an outpatient substance abuse program as the director of adolescent services. From there she opened up her own private private practice where she worked with individuals and families that suffered from both addiction and other mental health issues. After moving back to the Kansas City area Maria has worked at two different adult outpatient substance abuse treatment programs. While in these positions she has developed the treatment programs both in English and in Spanish. With more than a dozen of survey responses shared with Rehabs.com to date, alumni accounts are overwhelmingly positive. “Sunflower Wellness Retreat saved my life,” wrote alum J.H. in a statement representative of more than a dozen others. “The staff is the big reason. They really cared about my recovery and success and I will always be grateful.”

Dana, another alum, shared her success story. “This place rocks!” she wrote. “The staff goes above and beyond. Praise was similarly high on Google, where the center earned 4.6 out of five stars based on 26 reviews to date.[1] Several alumni credit the facility with saving their lives, and many remarks compliment the facility's cleanliness and excellent food. Much in contrast, C.I. was mostly disappointed with how the facility handled their son. “My son hadn't had a shower the whole time he was there. I put him there trusting they knew how to deal with someone coming off drugs . If it is left up to the patient to do what is needed then what is the purpose of him being there...this is not a professional place really sorry I put my son there,.”

L.F., an employee at this facility, indicated that she had no concerns about the quality of care: “All clients say they may have been to a different rehab but this is the best one they have been to.” She awarded five- out of five-star ratings for the experience of the addiction staff and the overall quality of care.
