Townsend Outpatient Addiction Treatment Center — Baton Rouge

7434 Picardy Avenue, Suite A & B, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 70808
Townsend, owned and operated by Avenues Recovery Centers, has eight addiction facilities located across South Louisiana. Townsend offers a spectrum of innovative rehabilitation services based on the needs of each patient. Patients are treated with encouragement and respect by blending high quality addiction therapy with compassionate counseling in a safe recovery environment. The core philosophy at Townsend is that addiction is a chronic brain disease that can be managed or put in “remission.” Using The Townsend Way their team strives to help both patients and loved ones heal from their addictions and enjoy an improved quality of life. Once the patient’s acute medical condition has stabilized, The Townsend Way offers a unique, effective, and long-term plan to keep his or her addiction in remission. Townsend treatment offers an intensive outpatient therapy (IOP) phase which varies in length according to the patient’s needs. After completing this IOP phase, Townsend provides former patients with continuing care via enrollment in their optional chronic disease management plan to keep their disease in remission.

Based in Baton Rogue, La., Townsend of Baton Rouge provides outpatient treatment to individuals struggling with substance use disorder. This facility also provides treatment for other addictive behavior, including compulsive sex, overeating, and gambling. In 2017, 39.7 percent of facilities in Louisiana offered treatment for gambling use disorder.

One of eight facilities of the Louisiana-based Townsend network, the Baton Rouge location also offers ambulatory medical detox services. It's one of only 19 outpatient facilities in Louisiana (just 14 percent of all outpatient facilities in the state) to provide medical detox.

According to Townsend’s website, the center’s approach to treatment is designed to address the underlying causes of addiction, namely the effect that substances have on the reward centers of the brain.

Before beginning treatment, clients take a substance abuse assessment to assist clinicians in forming an individualized plan of care. Unique to Townsend’s model of treatment, the program offers genetic testing, which may help indicate specific biological factors contributing to addictive behavior.

The Baton Rouge facility offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP), which is a treatment level available in just about half (50.7 percent) of outpatient facilities in Louisiana. Both day and evening sessions are offered, and the program includes individual counseling, group therapy, and addiction education.

Townsend also may incorporate medication-assisted therapy (MAT) (e.g., Suboxone) for individuals battling opioid dependency. Townsend of Houma encourages family participation in treatment and holds a weekly family night.

The center’s website states that under the direction of a clinical director, Townsend of Baton Rouge employs a team of psychiatrists, licensed professional counselors, case managers, and phlebotomists for medical testing.

The one former client polled by Rehabs.com to date gave Townsend of Baton Rouge mostly positive feedback. The anonymous alum reported that they found the group therapy to be very helpful and the counselors to be caring and knowledgeable. "I loved the group meeting/counciling," the alum wrote. "I can\'t say enough about how I much I loved my counselors and overall the whole staff." Their one complaint was about a specific staff member, a doctor, whom they found rude and condescending.

Of the five former clients who left feedback, three reported positive experiences while two offered negative reviews. In a review representative of positive feedback, Meredith wrote: I can't say enough about this wonderful staff. They have truly helped me and given me so much information to take with me."

However, in a review representative of negative feedback, Mike wrote: "I finished my time here and I have tried to reach out several times and no one has even returned a phone call...I do not recommend Townsend in Baton Rouge at all! They do not teach you how to scientifically approach addiction, they do not teach you anything!"

The loved one polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing, an anonymous 26 to 39 year old male, gave Townsend of Baton Rouge positive feedback. He awarded the facility four or five out of five stars for its cleanliness, its counseling options, its administrative and discharge procedures, its family participation, and its staff's level of training and experience. "Really caring about the people that are treating," he wrote.

According to the center’s website, Townsend of Baton Rouge has contracts with many private insurance and managed care providers, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, to cover the cost of treatment. Patients are responsible for co-payments and deductibles, and financing may be available to qualified clients.

As of January 28, 2019, all Townsend facilities are no longer owned and operated by American Addiction Centers (AAC). They are now a part of Avenues Recovery Centers.
