Townsend Outpatient Addiction Treatment Center — Houma

1340 W. Tunnel Blvd #212, Houma, Louisiana, 70360
Townsend, owned and operated by Avenues Recovery Centers, has eight addiction facilities located across South Louisiana. Townsend offers a spectrum of innovative rehabilitation services based on the needs of each patient. Patients are treated with encouragement and respect by blending high quality addiction therapy with compassionate counseling in a safe recovery environment. The core philosophy at Townsend is that addiction is a chronic brain disease that can be managed or put in “remission.” Using The Townsend Way their team strives to help both patients and loved ones heal from their addictions and enjoy an improved quality of life. Once the patient’s acute medical condition has stabilized, The Townsend Way offers a unique, effective, and long-term plan to keep his or her addiction in remission. Townsend treatment offers an intensive outpatient therapy (IOP) phase which varies in length according to the patient’s needs. After completing this IOP phase, Townsend provides former patients with continuing care via enrollment in their optional chronic disease management plan to keep their disease in remission.

These two terms describe a person who is not only addicted to drugs or alcohol, but also has a mental or emotional illness, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. Facilities that treat patients with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders provide psychiatric treatment in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.
  • Holistic Therapy

Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.

Rehabs 360 Guide

Located 57 miles southwest of New Orleans, Townsend of Houma, Louisiana provides outpatient treatment to individuals struggling with substance use disorder. This facility also provides treatment for other addictive behavior, including compulsive sex, overeating, and gambling. In 2017, 39.7 percent of facilities in Louisiana offered treatment for gambling use disorder. Operated by the Louisiana-based Townsend network, the Houma center serves all of Terrebone and Lafourche Parishes.

According to Townsend’s website, the center’s treatment approach is designed to address the underlying neurobiological factors of addiction, namely the effect that addictive behaviors have on the brain’s reward centers. Treatment modalities include motivational interviewing (MI), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), the latter of which is offered by 45.6 percent of Louisiana treatment facilities.

Upon admission, clients undergo an initial substance abuse assessment — and for some, genetic testing — to help clinicians determine an individualized plan of care.

The Houma location offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP), which is a treatment level available in just about half (50.7 percent) of outpatient facilities in Louisiana. Both day and evening sessions are offered, and the program includes individual counseling, group therapy, and addiction education.

Townsend also may incorporate medication-assisted therapy (MAT) (e.g., Suboxone) for individuals battling opioid dependency. Townsend of Houma encourages family participation in treatment and holds a weekly family night.

Townsend of Houma employs a team of psychiatrists, case managers, substance abuse counselors, and phlebotomists for medical testing.

The two alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com to date had opposing opinions of Townsend of Houma. Dave reported having a positive experience in the program and wrote: "It was a huge and beneficial learning experience. What I learned will be a huge part of my life from here forward."

T.P., on the other hand, noted that they would not recommend the program to others, and gave it just two out of five stars for its counseling options. Their main complaint was that the program was disorganized and did a poor job with follow-up. "All over the place no real rhym or reason and after three weeks was useless to hear same information.Seemed to be more worried about money the. The patients," they wrote.

The facility fared well on Google[1], where it earned two five-star ratings from former clients. "The staff are angels here at Townsend, they truly give you the tools you need to be ok and for my fellow addicts you know how important that is," A.A.C. wrote in a representative review.

According to the website, Townsend of Houma accepts a range of private insurance plans, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, to cover the cost of treatment, as well as self-payment. Clients are responsible for co-payments and deductibles, and financing may be available to qualified individuals.

As of January 28, 2019, all Townsend facilities are no longer owned and operated by American Addiction Centers (AAC). They are now a part of Avenues Recovery Centers.
