  • 12-Step

The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
  • Client & Family Support Groups

Group therapy is a vital component of addiction recovery treatment, considered as important and effective (sometimes even more so) than individual therapy. Benefits include reducing isolation and loneliness and providing the opportunity to learn from others in recovery. In the addiction setting, group therapy is run by trained professionals who guide participants toward a shared goal of recovery.

O’Brien’s knows the struggle with addiction all too well. At a young age, she was the main support system for her older brother’s battle with heroin. "The life he lives today is remarkably different than the life that he had been living. I couldn't imagine his life continuing without his sobriety. It was after he lived in a similar sober house that I decided to dedicate my efforts to helping others with addiction.”

Rehabs 360 Guide

Set on a tree-lined street in a historic home in Attleboro, Mass., Sober 4 Life provides safe and structured transitional living for adult men seeking treatment for substance use disorders. It is one of the 119 (33.9 percent) residential treatment facilities in the state. Detox is not available on site.

All clients are individually assessed so that a personalized treatment plan can be created. In Massachusetts, only 255 (72.6 percent) of treatment facilities include mental health screenings in their treatment process. Each client must commit to a set minimum stay at Sober 4 Life, which varies for each individual. Stays at the sober living facility can last up to 18 months, making it one of Massachusetts’ 91 (25.9 percent) of long-term treatment facilities.

The program is based on the 12-Steps and designed to help clients successfully acclimate back into everyday life. Residents learn to rely on their peers for strength and support, as well as turn to 12-step fellowships such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Drug and alcohol testing is conducted at least twice a week. The 12-Step program is only used in 247 (70.4 percent) of Massachusetts’ treatment facilities.

During the first 30 days of residency, clients are paired with a peer mentor and are tasked with finding a 12-step sponsor. As they progress through the program, clients build and strengthen their leadership skills and become mentors in their own right.

The staff includes house managers and `life skills counselors.

Built in the early 1900s, the Sober 4 Life house is set on a half-acre of land and can accommodate up to 16 residents in shared bedrooms. It has a wraparound porch and a backyard with a sitting area, in addition to a gourmet kitchen, a cozy common area, a flat-screen TV, and Wi-Fi access. Clients are given complimentary memberships to a nearby gym, and may also use the weights and exercise equipment available onsite.
