ABOUT PROJECT TURNABOUT
Project Turnabout operates four addiction treatment facilities in Minnesota. At its main campus in Granite Falls, Minn., about 130 miles west of Minneapolis, the nonprofit offers medical detox, residential and outpatient treatment for adult men and women struggling with substance misuse and/or gambling. A 2017 SAMHSA survey indicated that 8.7 percent of rehabs in Minnesota offer treatment for gambling addiction.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Treatment starts with an assessment with a licensed counselor in order to determine the appropriate detox options and level of service. Substance misuse treatment is gender-specific, but the gambling program is co-ed. Treatment length varies widely, with some inpatient stays averaging 28 to 45 days and others going for up 90 or 120 days. The gambling program lasts 30 days.
All treatment programs are rooted in the 12-Steps. Treatment modalities are standard. They include individual, group, and family therapy, as well as holistic offerings (e.g. fitness training and dietary management). Therapy focuses on developing coping skills, cultivating support systems, and learning how addiction relates to relationships and other issues. Daily lectures, group meetings, and other recovery formal activities are also on schedule.
The Vanguard Center for problem gambling is an independent center within Project Turnabout, but residents share all the resources available to those in the substance misuse program. Treatment follows the 12-Steps of Gamblers Anonymous and includes motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), group therapy, psychoeducation, mindfulness, and family programming. The gambling program is only available at this location.
Offering similar treatment modalities as in residential care, the intensive outpatient program (IOP) runs for approximately eight weeks and includes a total of 25 three-hour sessions. A step-down relapse prevention program offers 16 sessions, for a total of 48 scheduled hours. Finally, a 12-week continuing care program is offered to all successful graduates.
According to the facility’s website, the treatment team includes registered and licensed nurses, dietician, personal trainer, chaplain, certified gambling counselors, and licensed mental health and drug and alcohol counselors. Project Turnabout is certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), a certification held by 10.1 percent of rehabs in Minnesota To date, the four individuals polled by Rehabs.com on the matter appreciated the aptitude of staff.
