  • 12-Step

The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
  • Family Program

Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

Rehabs 360 Guide

First established in 1994, Phoenix Recovery Programs has grown from a boy’s home in Maplewood, Minn., to a state-licensed agency with residential and transitional homes and outpatient services in Janesville, Bear Lake, and Mankato. The nonprofit is one of just 151 (42.4 percent) in the state and each of its four locations are licensed through the Minnesota Department of Human Services for integrated treatment for substance use and co-occurring disorders.

In Maplewood, residential treatment serves boys ages 14 to 18 with 90 days of one-on-one counseling and small groups, 12-step meetings, skills training, and more. Relative to other facilities statewide, the program for teenage boys is one of just 104 (29.2 percent) that offers more than 30 days of care and one of 74 (20.8 percent) that’s dedicated exclusively to teens.

To be eligible for Phoenix Recovery Program’s 90-day program, prospective clients must be males between the ages of 14 and 18; they and/or their parents should contact the facility directly by phone to schedule an admission and facility tour. Occasional exceptions are made for clients as old as 19, depending on their legal status.

Programming follows the 12-Steps, incorporating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational enhancement techniques (MET) in twice-weekly individual therapy and 17 hours of groups. Another important program expectation, residents are to attend three 12-step meetings a week. Additional focus is placed on independent living skills, continued attendance at school, community service, and 12-step sponsorship. Cookouts, dances, conventions, and other activities are held throughout the year.

Outpatients attend about 19 hours of group therapy and one individual counseling session each week. Therapy is gender-specific, and families are encouraged to attend weekly family therapy and education groups.

Phoenix Recovery Programs employs a team of licensed alcohol drug abuse counselors (LADC) a licensed psychologist, and a licensed social worker. The staff-to-client ratio is 1:6.

Phoenix Recovery Programs in Maplewood can accommodate up to 28 teen boys in a nurturing, home-like environment. Further details regarding the facility’s living arrangements and related offerings are not provided.
