Rehabs 360 Guide

The Extra Mile Recovery Men’s Addiction Treatment Center, located in Mantachie, Miss., is one of Mississippi’s 36 treatment programs that offer gender-specific treatment for men. It offers long-term residential treatment and sober living to adult men in recovery from substance abuse.

According to its website, the goal of the facility is to help clients increase their personal skills in honesty, accountability, employment, social interaction, self-esteem, and achievement. All residents of the facility must have successfully completed primary residential treatment before moving in. Detox is not available onsite.

The facility’s treatment program follows the 12-Steps, and clients regularly attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings. The 12-Step program is incorporated by 48 percent of U.S. facilities as a key component in treatment. It can be used in a faith-based or non-faith-based program and has been a proven-effective tool for long-term treatments.

Treatment is divided into three phases, making it one of Mississippi’s 28 long-term residential treatment programs. Phase One lasts for the first 30 days, Phase Two from months two through five, and Phase Three from six months on. All clients of the program must commit to staying for a minimum of six months and may stay as long as two years.

During Phase One, clients attend four to five AA or NA meetings per week, obtain a sponsor, participate in group and individual therapy, and look for employment. In Phase Two, clients continue to work through the 12-Steps and start employment once they secure a job.

During this phase, clients also form short and long-term goals with their counselors, may mentor newcomers to the program, and continue participating in all components of the Extra Mile program. Mentorship can be a useful method for improving accountability and is used in 63 of the state’s facilities. In Phase Three, clients continue to work through the same components of Phase Two.

Throughout treatment, clients will also receive individual counseling one time per week and attend an intensive group session once per week. Daily morning meditation groups are offered. Guest speakers and sober socials are planned.

Clients also receive advice and guidance on individual health and wellness plans to foster healing of the mind, body, and spirit. Attendance at church on Sunday mornings is mandatory, but clients may attend the church of their choice. Finally, clients receive regular, random drug and breath alcohol testing, which is a similar practice used in 32.6 percent of facilities within the state.

Extra Mile's treatment team includes a certified alcohol and drug counselors who is also the director and owner, a therapist, and a resident advisor who supervises and oversees the cabins and apartments. Resident advisors are clients who have at least one year of sobriety who assist the director with daily supervision and accountability of residents. The facility is a part of the 19 percent of U.S. facilities accredited by the Joint Commission.

The facility offers a total of 24 beds in rustic log cabins and apartments. Log cabins are two bedrooms, 1 bathroom units that house four individuals each. Apartments are either one or two bedrooms, one bathroom with two or four individuals in each.

Each unit includes a fully equipped kitchen and bedrooms with twin beds, linens, and closet space provided. Bathrooms are stocked with towels and other bath linens.
