ABOUT SERENITY AT SUMMIT BEHAVIORAL HEALTH
Serenity at Summit is a network of six rehab facilities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. Across its various locations, the agency offers a full spectrum of addiction treatment programs, from medical detox through outpatient care. Parent company Summit Behavioral Health is part of Delphi Behavioral Health, which operates numerous rehabs in the US.
This Union location of Serenity at Summit, in the suburbs of Newark, provides medical detox and residential treatment for adults struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health disorders. It's one of just 4.1 percent of rehabs in New Jersey that offer medical detox in a residential (as opposed to hospital) setting.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
During an initial evaluation, staff determine the best treatment program for the individual client. Clients referred to medical detox will have follow-up clinical and medical evaluations within 24 hours of admission, to enable staff to form an individualized treatment plan.
Detoxing clients are monitored 24/7 and begin counseling and other treatment modalities while they withdraw from drugs and/or alcohol. The length of stay in detox varies according to the client's needs, but for most clients, it's a five-to-seven day process.
Clients who have completed or don't need detox may proceed to residential treatment, which typically lasts 30 to 90 days, depending on the client's needs — positioning Serenity at Summit among the 11 percent of New Jersey rehabs that offer residential treatment lasting longer than 30 days.
Serenity offers a broad program that combines 12-step participation with evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), offered in individual, group, and family settings. These traditional modalities are complemented by a range of holistic treatments provided at an extra cost, including acupuncture (which is available at 2.6 percent of New Jersey rehabs) and reiki. For clients struggling with dual diagnosis, Serenity at Summit may offer trauma-informed counseling, educational sessions, and other relevant treatment options.
The center is also committed to instilling life skills in its clients. Sessions focus on topics including nutrition and preparing meals, paying bills, managing a budget, and preparing a résumé.
Graduating clients might be encouraged to progress to treatment at one of Serenity at Summit's outpatient facilities, which offer intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) as well as standard outpatient treatment. And graduating clients are also strongly encouraged to attend community-based 12-step meetings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Although Rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from alumni of Serenity at Summit's Union location, secondary sites offer polarized reviews: the center has a 3.1 out of five-star average rating based on 15 reviews on Google, a one-star rating and a five-star rating on Yelp, and three five-star ratings on Facebook (where the facility can manage its own page).
The reviews contained repeated complaints about unprofessional and/or unhelpful staff, particularly those staff who run the place outside of typical office hours. Some reviewers were also disappointed by the physical facility, and felt that there was a lack of meaningful programming. "The facility is dirty, not just the group rooms but also; the bedrooms don’t get cleaned properly as a whole... The food is trash and the technicians are mostly unprofessional. Counselors are the only good part about this detox," B.K. wrote in a typical comment on Google.
However, other reviewers praised the center's detox program, noting that it had helped them on the way toward long-term recovery, and thanked, in particular, the efficient intake staff and the helpful treatment staff. The facility's physical comfort also received repeated compliments. "All in all I had a great experience with serenity at summit they provided me with the care and comfort that I needed to get over that first hump of detoxing and helped point me in the direction that I needed to go once I left," Nick wrote in a representative review on Google.
