Group therapy is a vital component of addiction recovery treatment, considered as important and effective (sometimes even more so) than individual therapy. Benefits include reducing isolation and loneliness and providing the opportunity to learn from others in recovery. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

Khushbu Modh LCSW, LCADCClinical Director of Union OutpatientKhushbu Modh received her master’s in social work from New York University, is a licensed clinical social worker and a certified clinical supervisor. Her bachelor’s degree was completed at Rutgers University with a double major in psychology and criminal justice. With more than ten years of experience in the field, she has focused on substance use disorders and mental health. Khushbu believes in a person-centered approach using both cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy. She specializes in working with individuals and families in a clinical setting to address issues of substance use and mental health.- Christina Varano-SanabriaRegional Executive Director of NJ MarketsChristina D. Varano-Sanabria received her master’s degree in mental health counseling and addiction from Caldwell University. Over the course of her career, which spans more than a decade, she has exceeded requirements in order to obtain multiple licenses which include her LPC, LCADC, and ACS in the state of New Jersey. She believes in a client-centered approach utilizing DBT and CBT methods and has worked in both clinical and private practice settings addressing issues ranging from addiction to co-occurring disorders. Her undergraduate degree was completed in psychology at Manhattan College. She is also certified in treating anger management and is a national board-certified counselor. Christina’s hobbies include spending time with her husband and her 1-year-old puppy Flash, reading, and spending time in nature.

ABOUT SERENITY AT SUMMIT UNION
Serenity at Summit operates five treatment facilities throughout New Jersey, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Located in Union, N.J., Serenity at Summit Union is one of the 46 (13.4 percent) of New Jersey treatment facilities that offers residential treatment to individuals who are struggling with substance use. The treatment center also offers detox and outpatient services including intensive outpatient treatment.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
According to Serenity at Summit's website, the treatment center offers a full continuum of treatment including medically-supervised detox. Treatment begins with an initial assessment, which is used to create an individualized treatment plan.
Clients in the detox program participate in mindful meditation sessions, check-ins, and educational groups. Programming also includes individualized counseling sessions, integrative movement, group sessions, and 12-step meetings. Holistic offerings offered includes acupuncture and reiki.
Following detox, clients transition to residential treatment or an outpatient programs. Residential treatment typically lasts between 30 and 90 days. Therapies available include behavioral, group and family counseling, life skills training, EMDR, expressive therapy, holistic therapy, and trauma therapy.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
Serenity at Summit's website notes the treatment team includes therapists, nurse practitioners, and counselors. It is one of the 66 (19.2 percent) of New Jersey treatment centers that is accredited by The Joint Commission.
