MY OVERALL TREATMENT WHILE THERE WAS FULLY EFFECTIVE. AS YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW, SOBRIETY AND RECOVERY IS THERE FOR THE PEOPLE THAT TRULY WANT IT... AND I DID. MY RECREATIONAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL "RESEARCH" WAS OVER.ONE OF THE REASONS WHY I LEFT THE ORIGINAL PROGRAM IS BECAUSE IT WAS "THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY" WHICH IS IMMENSLY DIFFERENT FROM A 28 DAY PROGRAM. ADDITIONALLY, I LEFT BECAUSE I NO LONGER FELT SAFE AS A GAY MAN. ALSO BECAUSE MY SUPPORT FROM THE COUNSELORS BEGAN TO GET CONTENTIOUS. I BELIEVE THIS WAS BECAUSE I CARRIED MYSELF DIFFERENTLY THAN MY CO-DRUG SOBER ADDICTS (WHICH OFTEN HAPPENS) AND ONCE IT CAME TO LIGHT THAT I HAD BEEN TO COLLEGE, IT SEALED THE DEAL. ONE OF MY COUNSELORS IN MY CONVERSATION ABOUT NO LONGER FEELING SAFE, AMONGST OTHER THINGS HE SAID TO ME THAT BECAUSE I HAD A LITTLE BIT OF COLLEGE AND I SPOKE WELL, I HAD A "BETTER THAN ATTITUDE" TO WHICH I REPLIED THAT THIS WAS NOT TRUE BECAUSE I RECOGNIZED THAT I WAS AN ADDICT JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE THERE AND MY WILLINGNESS TO DO THE PROGRAM WAS MY GOAL. AFTER FURTHER UNINSPIRING DIALOGUE, I DECIDED TO LEAVE THAT NIGHT WITH THE 1 TOKEN THAT THEY GAVE ME, MUCH TO THE CONCERN OF THE PEOPLE I HAD GOTTEN TO KNOW WHILE THERE, TRYING TO ENCOURAGE ME NOT TO LEAVE BECAUSE I WOULDN'T STAY SOBER. I TOLD THEM THAT I WOULD AND NEVER COME BACK THERE. I STAYED SOBER UNTIL I GOT A BED AT SMITHERS. MY SOBRIETY DATE WAS NOVEMBER 7TH 1990. I HAVE BEEN SOBER EVER SINCE THEN...23YRS FOR WHICH I WILL BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL.
I have struggled with relapses over the years and so have been to seafield three times, and I recommend it to anyone in need. The food is great as institution food goes. The staff are efficient, knowledgeable and caring. One issue is that lectures get repetitive, but the idea is that you are kept busy since new recovery is most effective with strict structure in place. There are millions of things people complain about at seafield, and on these reviews, however you get from the program exactly what you put in. Ive seen patients say staff treated them rudely or unfairly, however, in my experience that usually was because that patient was rude first, and demanding as addicts usually are. The staff know exacyly how to address addicts, which means they give respect if you give it to them. Girls complained about drama and gossip and fought over men who were sending multiple women notes. Magically, I never was involved in or bothered by any of these issues, since I stayed in my lane and focused on recovery, not making friends or finding a boyfriend. My advice is to do the same and you will have an excellent experience here. You’re very luck they don’t make you do daily chores other than make your bed, as other rehabs have patients do things like cleaning toilets, etc. They also pay a fine so that patients are allowed to smoke outside, since they believe you’re going through enough giving up other drugs.
I attended this program for a year and it's changed my life. I've now been sober of 18 months and I don't ever want the life I had before God and this home entered my life. I'm so greatful that this home provided me with a new way of living.
