    These two terms describe a person who is not only addicted to drugs or alcohol, but also has a mental or emotional illness, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. Facilities that treat patients with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders provide psychiatric treatment in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.
  • Intensive Outpatient

    Patients who undergo intensive outpatient treatment continue to live at home and sometimes go to school or work while participating in a highly structured treatment protocol that is focused on ending substance abuse. Programs vary in terms of how much treatment patients receive, how often and for how long. Some facilities design individualized intensive outpatient treatment programs.

ABOUT THE NORD CENTER

Offering “prevention, treatment, and advocacy,” The Nord Center is a comprehensive behavioral and mental health facility that serves children, adolescents, and adults in greater Lorain County, Ohio. For clients struggling with substance abuse, the organization provides outpatient-based care, dual diagnosis treatment, and aftercare.

Although The Nord Center's addiction services do not include medical detoxification or residential treatment, it conducts a residential services option that secures supportive housing. Among treatment facilities in Ohio, The Nord Center is among 77.3 percent of treatment facilities that are private nonprofit and 57.2 percent that provide an intensive outpatient program (IOP). In addition, Nord Center is among the 47.9 percent of Ohio treatment facilities with special programs for clients with co-occurring disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To start the process at The Nord Center, potential clients may call the intake line to schedule an appointment from Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Walk-in appointments also are available, if clients arrive before 9 a.m. Tuesday through Friday. The Nord Center offers two levels of substance abuse treatment programming: an IOP and a standard outpatient program (OP).

According to the facility's website, substance abuse treatment at The Nord Center is evidence-based and includes individual counseling, pre-treatment engagement groups, group counseling, family education and therapy, as well as aftercare sessions and/or aftercare planning.

The dual diagnosis program is designed to integrate treatment for mental health disorders with treatment for chemical dependency. Clients may receive ongoing medication management, as well as counseling and educational classes.

Utilizing the facility's other services, clients also may be referred to receive vocational assistance and homelessness prevention services. Treatment is available in other languages, and the facility offers culturally sensitive services for African Americans.

At The Nord Center, the treatment team consists of advanced nurse practitioners, therapists, substance abuse counselors, pharmacy technicians, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals.

"Their only goal is to label you with a diagnosis so they can medicate, medicate, medicate. As far as counseling? Complete joke.”
