Gateway Rehab is a substance abuse treatment facility providing inpatient and outpatient treatment for chemically-dependent individuals struggling with addiction. Upon the successful completion of medical detoxification, clients are provided 28 days of inpatient treatment including services such as group, individual, and family counseling, addiction education, relapse prevention, gender-specific care, and more. Outpatient and aftercare services are available as well.

    Abraham J. Twerski, M.DFounder
    Gateway Rehabilitation Center was founded in 1972 by Abraham J. Twerski, M.D., an internationally respected authority on the treatment of alcohol and other drug dependencies, and the Sisters of St. Francis. The author of more than 60 books, including collaborations with the late Charles Schulz, creator of the Peanuts characters, Dr. Twerski has lectured extensively on chemical dependency and other topics such as stress, self-esteem and spirituality. In addition, Dr. Twerski has traveled the world as a spokesperson for recovery on behalf of the millions who have achieved it and with goals that inspire, encourage and challenge those still finding their way.

Located in Youngstown, Ohio, Gateway Rehab is a private nonprofit facility, which make up about 77 percent of all treatment facilities in Ohio; it is one of the 86 (21 percent) of Ohio treatment centers that offers residential treatment services. According to Gateway Rehab's website, each client receives personalized treatment services, and the center offers multiple treatment options and plans. Treatment begins with screenings, diagnosis, and assessments, which are used to create treatment plans.

The treatment team utilizes evidence-based treatment that's designed to treat all levels of addiction including physical, psychological, and emotional. Plans may include gender- and age-specific treatments in individual and small-group settings. Programming includes individual, group, and family therapy.

The center also provides cognitive behavioral therapy and medicated assisted treatment. The center is one of the 299 (73 percent) of Ohio treatment facilities that provides 12-step facilitation. Clients also participate in relapse prevention and coping skills education.


Gateway Rehab is one of the 101 (24.7 percent) of Ohio treatment facilities that is accredited by The Joint Commission. The treatment team includes counselors and case managers.
