ABOUT SILVERMIST

Silvermist is a private luxury addiction treatment center situated on a gated 30-acre lot in the hills of rural Western Pennsylvania, about 45 minutes north of downtown Pittsburgh. The 10,000 square-foot campus is among the state's 143 (28.5 percent) non-hospital residential treatment programs for individuals seeking treatment for addiction. Additionally, this center is among the 255 (50.8 percent) facilities to offer co-occurring mental health disorders treatment tracks in Pennsylvania. To treat opioid addictions, Silvermist is also one of the 165 (32.9 percent) treatment facilities in the state authorized to prescribe Suboxone.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, clients may undergo an initial substance abuse and mental health assessment, and prospective clients must commit to a minimum of two weeks at Silvermist. Although men and women stay in gender-separate units, treatment programming is co-ed.

Programming is based both on 12-Step and holistic therapies. Following a morning meditation and brief community meeting, residents spend their days immersed in process groups, one-on-one therapy, psychoeducational classes, and 12-step study. Afternoons are typically dedicated for recreational and personal time with holistic options in equine therapy, yoga, and the creative arts.

While residing in a log cabin, only steps away from Slivermist’s main residence, those enrolled in the partial hospitalization program (PHP) attend 30-45 minute life skills groups. Each day, they’ll cover practical, everyday skills such as meal planning, budgeting, and time management, as well as develop an approach to resume writing and job searching. PHP participants can expect to meet with their assigned therapist for 30 minutes at a time, at least twice a week.

As treatment at Silvermist is trauma-informed, “recognizing a person’s current situation and actions as a result of past negative events,” the facility utilizes a range of evidence-based therapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Therapists at Silvermist are also trained to addressed and treat co-occurring mental health disorders. Aftercare services include referrals to sober living homes and local 12-step meetings. Follow-up care is provided on an outpatient basis.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes physicians board-certified in addiction medicine and anesthesiology, a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), and several licensed professional counselors (LPCs). According to the facility, Silvermist maintains a staff-to-client ratio of 1:5.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Silvermist can accommodate a maximum of 14 clients at a time in separate homes for men and women. This suggests a specialized level of care, as the average number of individuals at residential treatment was 32 clients, as of 2016. The main residence, featuring exposed wood beams and high ceilings, can house up to nine men, while the refurbished Bank Barn can house up to five women. PHP clients reside on-site at Silvermist’s log cabin.

Private accommodations are also available for those who prefer solitude and personal space for a successful recovery. The 10,000 square-foot residence offers many unique amenities, including a movie theater, an on-site fitness center, an infrared sauna, and a heated saltwater swimming pool. Executive chefs cook three meals a day and can accommodate personal dietary restrictions upon request.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Two of the five program alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date provided very positive recovery experiences at Silvermist. “This place saved my life,” wrote former client A.B.C. “It has the best staff, the treatment is unbelievable and i would recommend it to anyone who is serious about getting their life together.”

Sharing details on his “wonderful experience,” alum H.A.B. celebrated the intimate community setting, the “very knowledgeable and helpful” staff, and the variety of “unbelievable” amenities offered. H.A.B. also awarded Silvermist perfect five-star ratings on several areas regarding staff, including their support, availability, respect shown to clients’ preferences, and level of training and experience.

A third alum, however, highlighted some “unprofessional and uncalled for” habits of Silvermist staff: “The rehab is very nice however the staff completely disregards any privacy policies.” Former client J.M. echoed this sentiment, referring to the staff as "coddling," and feeling that his treatment was "Extremely expensive yet highly ineffective."

Reviews were lukewarm on Google at the time of this writing, where the facility was given a five-star and a three-star rating from two former clients.[1] Only the three-star reviewer provided written feedback, feeling that the small size allowed for "a lot of idle time and not enough to do after groups."

FINANCING

The cost of treatment comes to $1,000 per day, though prospective clients must commit to a minimum-stay of two weeks. A month’s treatment costs $30,000 and three months comes to $45,000. Silvermist accepts self-payment and private insurance plans, including like Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, and Cigna, on an out-of-network basis.
