Rehabs 360 Guide

Founded in 1968, Sundown M Ranch is a nonprofit addiction treatment center located in Yakima, Wash. that serves both adolescents and adults struggling with substance misuse and co-occurring disorders. Available services include detox, residential treatment, intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), and standard outpatient care (OP).

According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 44.4 percent of rehabs in Washington State are operated by private nonprofits. The same survey indicates that only 16.2 percent offer residential treatment of some kind.

Most clients seeking residential treatment complete a pre-admission application, though in some cases, same-day admission is possible. If indicated, clients begin their treatment with a detoxification period. Once stabilized, they engage in a highly structured curriculum that includes 12-step facilitation, individual, group, and family therapy, as well addiction education and ongoing evaluation.

Sundown M Ranch is one of 115 rehabs in Washington State (29 percent of all rehabs in the state) to offer a specialized treatment track for adolescents, one of 73 (18.4 percent) to offer one for pregnant and post-partum women, and one of 51 rehabs (12.9 percent) to offer a track for older adults. Adolescent clients may continue to attend school while undergoing treatment through the center’s school program, which is operated in conjunction with the Selah School District.

Outpatient treatment for clients and their families is available through individualized counseling and the center’s IOP program, which utilizes addiction education and group counseling. Sundown M Ranch facilitates peer-to-peer mentorship through its alumni program. There is also specialized treatment for individuals who have relapsed.

According to the facility’s website, Sundown M Ranch employs a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals and certified counselors. The facility is one of 70 rehabs in Washington State (17.7 percent of all rehabs in the state) certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). To date, the 14 individuals polled by Rehabs.com on the matter generally appreciated the aptitude of staff.

Sundown M Ranch is situated on 30 acres of land near the Yakima River Canyon. Living quarters for both adults and teens are gender-specific and simply furnished. All clients have access to a 7,000-square-foot gym and chaplain services. Visitors and phone calls are allowed following an initial six-day “blackout” period.

Over 50 alumni reviews were submitted to Rehabs.com to date, a majority of which were mostly positive. In particular, multiple clients found the treatment to be both affordable and effective. The two alumni polled on the facility's affordability each rated it four out of five stars.

Others praised the staff, food, and treatment options. “I had the tools to change, and a strong AA connection. The facility is beautiful, the food is fantastic, and the counselors were all great. I wanted to stay forever,” alum T. wrote in a representative review.

Some alumni did, however, complain about the staff’s training and the program’s counseling. M.T., who otherwise characterized the program as “great,” offered some representative criticism: “I really did not receive much one on one time with my counselor but if I needed her she was there for me."
