  • 12-Step

The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
  • Individual Therapy

This term describes one-on-one therapy, in which a patient and trained counselor, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist meets privately with a patient to discuss challenges related to lifestyle, work, family and romantic relationships that may have contributed to the development of an addiction.

Rehabs 360 Guide

The Serenity Recovery Clinic offers outpatient-based treatment services for adults struggling with addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders, including specialized services for individuals charged with Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) offenses. The facility is located in Greenfield, Wis., about 10 miles southwest of Milwaukee.

Before beginning a treatment program, clients participate in an initial substance abuse assessment to identify individual needs. Treatment is based on the disease model of addiction. Each client follows a personalized treatment plan that utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in one-on-one therapy and group therapy settings. According to the facility's website, group therapy may consist of about eight participants maximum.

Through counseling sessions, clients receive education on recognizing and preventing relapse while addressing any co-occurring disorders that may contribute to addiction. According to the facility’s website, the primary objective of treatment is to help clients identify triggers, process obstacles to recovery, and apply strategies to maintain sobriety.

The center also runs a group for individuals who have been convicted of homicide through a OWI offense. In addition, the organization is certified by the state and offers a number of services related to the criminal justice system, including Alternative to Revocation treatment (i.e. addiction recovery programs for those who will violate their terms of probation unless they receive treatment), as well as incarceration preparation, pre-sentence investigations, and random drug testing.

All assessments and one-on-one treatment sessions are carried out by licensed Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse (AODA) counselors. The leading therapist is a certified clinical substance abuse counselor (CSAC) who has practiced at the Serenity Recovery Clinic for more than nine years.
