Christian Rehab Centers for Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Deciding to get help for drug or alcohol addiction can be one of the most impactful and important decisions you ever make. There are many factors to consider when choosing a suitable treatment facility. These may include the location of the treatment facility, the cost of services, and the duration of treatment. Another important factor to consider is your religion and spiritual views and whether you may want to receive treatment at a Christian rehab center.

If religion, such as Christianity, is an important part of your life, you may want to consider a facility offering treatment that aligns with your personal beliefs. Choosing an addiction treatment program that incorporates Christianity or other spiritual views may feel more supportive.

Here, you will learn more about what a Christian rehab center is, including the benefits of choosing a Christian drug rehab program, types of treatment settings, and the Christian treatment programs available to you.

What Is a Christian Rehab Center?

A Christian rehab center offers addiction treatment from a Christian perspective. This may include therapy with Christian counselors, Bible studies, or other Biblically-based services so that you can continue to practice your faith while receiving treatment.

Formal substance addiction treatment programs can help you move through the recovery process with support and may help you achieve long-term abstinence. Research has shown that people who attend addiction treatment programs and remain in them are more likely to stop using alcohol and drugs, be involved in less criminal activity, and improve their psychological, occupational, and social functioning.

Some research has shown that faith-based treatment programs may help prevent people from substance misuse and/or support them through their recovery.2 Researchers studied two 12-month substance misuse treatment programs and found that people who completed all components of treatment that had faith-based elements reported less substance use at successive follow-ups.2

The 12-Step group Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has been an important part of the recovery process for many people and incorporates a belief in a “higher power.” While AA is not exclusively a Christian treatment program, its focus on a higher power combined with social support may help people in their addiction recovery.3

Types of Christian Addiction Treatment Programs

Drug and alcohol treatment programs offer a variety of different settings and treatment approaches. Treatment settings range in intensity, and the treatment plan is constantly evolving and being modified as you work your way through the recovery process.

Some people may enter detoxification (detox) as the first step in the treatment process. A detox program alone does not constitute a complete treatment program, but it is an important aspect of a person’s overall treatment.4

People who need more supervision and clinical care, or who have more severe substance misuse isues, may begin with inpatient treatment. Inpatient treatment or residential treatment is typically more intensive than outpatient care and requires a person to stay overnight in the facility. Services are conducted by licensed medical and treatment professionals and can include:4

Outpatient treatment varies in intensity levels depending on a person’s needs but does not require a person to remain overnight in the facility. During outpatient treatment, you are able to live at home and go to work and/or school while you attend therapy and receive other services on an outpatient basis. Individual, group, and family therapy are available on an outpatient basis and evidenced-based therapies used can include:4

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy. Assists in helping people notice, avoid, and effectively cope with triggers that may make them likely to relapse and use drugs or alcohol.
  • Motivational interviewing. Capitalizes on motivation to end the addiction and change behavior.
  • Motivational incentives. Involves the use of positive reinforcement to encourage sobriety and abstinence.
  • Multidimensional family therapy. A family therapy approach that focuses on improving overall family functioning by exploring the influence of the addiction across the entire family system.

Christian-based rehab may offer services incorporated into the evidence-based interventions and treatment settings outlined above. Faith-based elements such as 12-Step meetings, Bible study, prayer groups, and other religious elements can be included as part of your treatment program at a Christian-based drug rehab program.

What Is Faith-Based Therapy?

Faith-based therapy is similar to other types of behavioral therapy; however, therapists use religious or spiritual insights to help inform sessions with clients.6

Christian counseling may use Biblical principles and scriptures to help people through recovery and allow them to better understand their relationships with others.

Faith-based Aftercare Services

Upon discharge from a Christian drug rehab program, a continuing care plan of recovery can be helpful as people transition back to daily life. This recovery plan may involve:

  • Ongoing Christian-based therapy.
  • Sober living.
  • Church attendance.
  • A Christian mentor.
  • Psychiatrist.
  • 12-Step, Christ-centered groups.
  • Medication management for mental health conditions.

A comprehensive aftercare plan, made between you and your treatment team, is key to relapse prevention. Your aftercare plan should not be altered in any way without speaking to a therapist or medical professional.

What Are the Benefits of a Christian Rehab Center?

Christian rehab programs not only include research-based elements of traditional rehab, but also create space for Christianity through worship, prayer, pastoral counseling, and other services. The type of faith-based services included is dependent upon your preferences and the services offered at the Christian-based treatment facility.

Additionally, being part of a Christian-based rehab program allows you to surround yourself with other faith-oriented people who have similar beliefs and recovery goals. Social support may be a determiner of overall health and wellness and can be a key element in the recovery process. In fact, social support may increase longevity and protect against disease.5

Substance use treatment can be effective at treating addiction and offers a variety of benefits, including a higher quality of life. Substance use treatment addresses both mental and physical health issues and includes a variety of services, from medically assisted detox to behavioral counseling, long-term follow up and relapse prevention.4 Whether you decide to choose a Christian rehab center or non-religious rehab, formal treatment can be an important first step in your recovery process.
