Habilitat

Habilitat isn\'t your run of the mill treatment center. Its a highly structured long term program. After trying many other short term programs my son finally got clean here and has been working and doing well on his own for several years now. I am very grateful to the people at Habilitat for working so hard to help him. Now if we could just get his brother to go get help.

Exclusive Hawaii Rehab

Beautiful, serene property and cozy home. Every meal is made to order, with love and is so amazing. The staff are the most committed, loving, kind, people who are doing what they were born for. The owners are so creative with meeting every person idividuals needs. Truly an amazing place to heal. Sometimes the cows moo really loud. I was court ordered for 90 days. I was taking adderral and also had autoimmune issues. I was so sad and torn to leave my kids who were 12 and 14 at the time and getting there was half the battle. Smelling the Hawaiin air, seeing the beautiful home and property and being met with such kindness and compassion eased my anxiety. The days were filled with teaching, discovery, art, play, exercise, delicious meals, laughter, tears, rest and self care. They are teachers of life with a lot of experience. And they actually practice what they preach. Some days I was really angry or sad and it was all accepted. That's the part I was most blown away by. There's nothing I could say or do that would make them treat me differently. They love and accept and are compassionate and kind because that's what they choose to do and be. No matter how I am that's how they are. I felt safe to explore the traumas of my past and look at my beliefs and how they shaped my life and to do it without judgment. I went back for more healing a few different times after that for a total of six months. The Exclusive Hawaii is truly a place of healing and has forever changed my life because of the vision, dedication and love that they live and give.

New Horizons Hawaii

The staff was very helpful and professional. In house living arrangements could've been better. I chose this facility because of the cost of the treatment and because their staff was very friendly, helpful and understanding.

HI Substance Abuse Facts

The rates of substance abuse problems among residents of Hawaii is comparable to national averages. A 2015 survey of drug and alcohol use by Hawaiian residents age 12 or older found that:1

  • About 62,000 people (5.4% of the state’s population) had an alcohol use disorder.
  • An estimated 3,000 people reported using heroin in the past year, up slightly from 2014.
  • Approximately 147,000 individuals reported using marijuana.
  • An estimated 22,000 people reported having abused cocaine.
  • Over half a million people reported past-month alcohol use.

One positive is that treatment enrollment is also on the rise, with nearly 6,000 people receiving substance abuse treatment services in 2015.1 Of the individuals receiving treatment, 62.3% were being treated for both drug and alcohol addiction, 23.5% for drug addiction only, and 14.2% for alcohol addiction only.1

Getting Addiction Treatment Help in HI

The search for addiction treatment may be daunting if you’re unsure of the process. The number of treatment programs available can be overwhelming, so consider what qualities you want in a recovery center before you start your search. Each treatment program is different. Some are luxurious, while others specialize in treating specific populations. Some may incorporate a holistic approach to recovery and some focus on more traditional methods. You may want to begin your search by calling treatment centers that you are interested in and asking them questions to find out more about their amenities, pricing, staff, policies, and other details.

Many treatment programs accept health insurance, so if you have an insurance plan, it is likely that your policy will provide least partial coverage. It may be helpful to call your provider to learn more about your specific plan’s coverage. You can also call our 24-hour helpline at to speak to a recovery support specialist about various treatment options.

Where Else Can I Find Help in HI?

Even without insurance, there are still many ways to finance your drug or alcohol addiction treatment, including the following options:

Medicaid: This state program provides assistance for low-income people of all ages and disabled individuals.3

  • Grants: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and other organizations make grants available that help pay for substance abuse treatment.
  • Payment plans: Many treatment programs allow people to pay for treatment in affordable installments instead of all at once.
  • Sliding scale: Some facilities take people’s financial situations into consideration by reducing their rates for those with lower incomes.

Some people may also utilize crowdfunding websites to help finance their recovery. Websites, such as GoFundMe and IndieGoGo allow you to create a fundraising campaign in which family members, friends, and even strangers can donate to your cause.

Resources in Hawaii

There are several local resources available to help you find the best substance abuse treatment for you. Each program has its strengths and weaknesses. What’s important is that you find one that you feel comfortable with.

The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division of Hawaii’s Department of Health provides a full list of treatment and recovery facilities located on the islands, complete with contact information and a summary of services provided at each one. The Hawaii Prevention Resource Center is also a valuable source of information on drug abuse, prevention efforts, rehab facilities, and more.

There are a number of 12-Step meetings held on the Hawaiian Islands that are free to attend and offer a supportive community of peers in recovery. Visit the Hawaii chapters of Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous (East Hawaii, West Hawaii) to find a meeting near you.

If you’re not sure whether you want to stay in Hawaii for treatment or visit another part of the country, try SAMHSA’s Behavioral Health Treatment Services Locator. You can search by city, state or zip code to find a rehab that suits your needs.

If you are experiencing a crisis and are in danger of hurting yourself or others, call 911 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Remember, addiction treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Regardless of the type of recovery program you wind up choosing, what’s important is that you took the first step towards a healthy, sober life.

You can also contact American Addiction Centers (AAC) for free at to learn more about treatment options.
