In government surveys conducted between 2014 and 2015, patterns of drug and alcohol abuse were seen across all ages and demographics:1–3

  • About 6.4% (or 4,000) of adolescents and teens between the ages of 12 and 17 reported using marijuana in the past month.
  • Approximately 10% (or 7,000) of that age group also reported using alcohol during the same time frame.
  • In South Dakotans 12 years and older, nearly 2,000 of them had used heroin in that year.
  • An estimated 403,000 South Dakota residents reported using alcohol in the past month, and 7.4% (or 51,000) of them also had an alcohol use disorder between 2014 and 2015.
